Sales Account Representative - Northeast Region

MANAGING EDITOR - DEFENCE SBU

Reporting to: Publisher - Defence SBU

Position summary:
To commission and manage external Editors ensuring that Jane's content is produced to a very high quality and on time in a variety of formats from online to hardcopy. The role requires taking responsibility for the profitability and quality of content of existing titles as well as researching, developing and successfully launching high margin new products.

Responsibilities:
  • Create a strategy for product/ content area to maximise the growth and profitability of existing and new products.
  • Implement information strategy across titles, ensuring that content is refreshed in line with market and online requirements and attention is paid to dramatically enhancing and highlighting the rate of change.
  • Define level of content change and frequency of information updating required from Editors and monitor against agreed standards.
  • Keep in touch with customer information needs through conducting regular interviews/ research.
  • Monitor sales progress against forecast and help generate and implement sales and marketing plans.
  • Negotiate Editor's and other contracts.
  • Monitor Editor's work to ensure high standards of content, accuracy and integrity are maintained and improved on. This includes legal standards - libel, copyright and secrecy legislation.
  • Source new Editors and update succession plans.
  • Conduct new product development in conjunction with Sales and Marketing.
  • Provide editorial guidance for all conferences assigned to your content area.
  • Manage internal teams within your area ensuring clear goals are set and monitored.
  • Ensure consistent house style is applied across all products.
  • Create and monitor budgets for all titles and work schedules
  • Liase with electronic delivery/ development.

Requirements:
  • Experience of managing other Editorial staff and contributors.
  • Ability to manage projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of civil and forces personnel at all levels of seniority.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.

Educational Requirements: Degree preferred.

Special Skills/Experience:

  • Knowledge or interest in military, naval or aviation matters is a bonus but not compulsory.
  • An editorial or marketing background would be an asset.

Responsibilities:
  • Volume keying and update of information on the department database from returned revision forms
  • Proofing of weekly control prints

TYPESETTER/ PROOF READER (DATABASE EDITOR)

Position summary:
This position would suit someone who has preferably some data coding or proof reading experience for hardcopy or electronic publications.


The position is in the Content Editing Department, which is responsible for the data control of 48 titles. Each title is split into batches, which are worked on throughout the year and sent to another department to go on-line. At the end of the updating cycle the complete book is sent through to Pre-Press for the page composition. Content Editing ensure that the data sent in by editors either electronically or by hardcopy is structured correctly for both on-line and hardcopy processes. Galleys are proofed out and checked internally for grammar and house style.


Responsibilities:
  • Ensuring that all data in the content centre is maintained and updated to the required standards of accuracy and timeliness.
  • Preparing new data using the appropriate mark-up and data structures, running file format conversions and macros as necessary.
  • Checking out data to Editors for updating, checking in updated data for verification and proofing.
  • Checking of data content, structures and mark-up in accordance with defined data standards (typesetting codes, HTML).
  • Producing galley proofs, copy editing and proof reading for English spelling and grammar in accordance with house style and other relevant data standards.
  • Checking page proofs for correct formatting and layout.
  • Ensuring that all data in the content centre is delivered for production in accordance with print and electronic publishing schedules.
  • Liaising with external Editors and Managing Editors as necessary to ensure that updating schedules and deadlines are met.


Requirements:

  • A good, practical understanding of computers and preferably typesetting codes.
  • Good keyboard/ typing and general computer skills (Word 97 an advantage).
  • Good English spelling and grammar.
  • Attention to detail.

CENTRAL MARKETING COPYWRITER

Reporting to: Central Marketing Services Manager

Position summary:
Provide master copy and guidelines for all marketing promotion material in prints and electronic formats in a timely and efficient manner.

Responsibilities:
  • Write, manage and implement the overall integrated copy operation of central marketing services including web copy and direct print and electronic mail for all mass, regional and new business development. Goal is to have mass copy complete for products produced in hard copy in the first half of the year completed by March 1, 2001; second half products completed by July 1, 2001.
  • Work with Central Marketing Services Manager to develop deeper "product" information on the web that will serve as prime source for all the marketing materials as well as provide the online shopper with a deeper understanding of the product. Goal is to have separate web pages for each, linked to order form on Janes.com by June 2001.
  • Develop strong product knowledge and company understanding through working with sales, editorial and marketing as well as understand the unique benefits of Jane's over other providers so as to be able to provide copy that clearly differentiates Jane's services. Product knowledge training - January - March 2001. Provide a product strategy to Central Marketing Services Manager that clearly defines the benefits by March 1, 2001.
  • Communicate and build an interactive relationship with sales, marketing and customer service teams to develop copy that supports customer requirements and sales initiatives. To be measured by regular meetings as well as feedback form members of above teams.
    Provide timely reporting of activity to date in monthly report.
Requirements:
  • Marketing or communications degree preferred or proven marketing and communication ability through proof of past work experience.
  • Excellent demonstrative written and oral skills.
  • Multi-task and results oriented individual.
  • Must possess ability to excel in a team environment.

PRODUCTION CONTROLLER

Reporting to: Production Services Manager

Position summary:
To manage the production control of certain Jane's products. Co-ordinating print buying, such as corporate printed stationery. Monitor stock control where appropriate. To ensure that all processes follow a digital workflow.

Responsibilities:
  • Liaison with in-house colleagues and external suppliers regarding the processing of editorial and advertisement material through all stages of Production, ensuring that products are of the highest quality standard.
  • Taking advertisement material in electronic format and ensuring that this has been supplied correctly.
  • Producing artwork on Apple Mac for items such as stationery and covers for books.
  • Producing purchase orders for all work.
Key Tasks:
  • Liase with advertising colleagues regarding adverts, ensuring that these adverts are supplied in the format required.
  • Providing solutions to advertisers with regard to digital advertising.
  • Handling all requirements for corporate printed stationery, keeping cost spreadsheets regularly updated and ensuring they are distributed to relevant staff.
  • Monitoring stock control for certain products.
  • Providing support to the Production Services team.

Educational requirements: A level standard

Special skills/ experience: Apple Mac (Quark Xpress/Photoshop/Illustrator) essential. Microsoft Office - (Word/Excel) essential. An understanding of publishing/printing processes would be an advantage.

Personality requirements: Proactive, organised and self-motivated. Flexible and team oriented.

EDITOR, JANE'S NAVY INTERNATIONAL

Reporting to: Publisher, Defence

Position summary:
To maintain the quality of, and enhance the position of the global magazine of naval operations and technology, in both its hardcopy and electronic formats.

Responsibilities:
  • Commissioning, writing and editing articles; picture research; travelling at home and abroad; covering tasks involving navies and/or defence industry; liaison with contributors and sub-editors; managing the tasks of the reporter who is also assigned to a sister title.
  • Devise and implement an editorial strategy that will ensure that Navy International maintains and enhances its position at the forefront of the market place.
    Ensuring the 10-times a year magazine is produced on schedule and to budget and that the content serves the needs of readers while rigidly maintaining Jane's reputation for accuracy, authority and impartiality.
  • Having the vision to drive the title to the next stage of electronic delivery by ensuring all copy suitable for publication is passed to the sub-editors as quickly as possible for release to Janes.com and Janesonline.
  • Assisting public relations, marketing and sales colleagues to promote the title and raise its profile, which together with leads and advice to advertising sales and circulation departments, will boost profitability.
Requirements:
  • College/University degree.
  • Knowledge of naval matters, equipment and personnel would be preferred.
  • At least three years in military/geopolitical journalism.
  • Experience of reporting, feature writing, commissioning and sub-editing.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to motivate others.
  • Sound computer skills.
  • Good team player.

CO-ORDINATING EDITOR, SENTINEL

Position summary:
A management role covering the functioning of the Sentinel department looking explicitly at the generation of high quality, sophisticated content.

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure continued high quality of Sentinel country report content produced on time across media formats.
  • Manage staff of three.
  • Support country report related initiatives within the Security SBU.
  • Supervise production of Sentinel data across all regions and media formats.
  • Keep Managing Editor, Country Assessments informed of developments in the department.
  • Maintain a high standard of presentational quality and accuracy, while initiating improvements to the content.
Educational Requirements: Degree or equivalent in International Relations or related discipline. Postgraduate experience desirable.
