HAF C-130 avionics upgrade shortlist

The Hellenic Air Force (HAF) has finalised the specifications for the avionics upgrade of its fleet of five C-130B and 10 C-130H Hercules airlifters (see JDU Vol IV No.13 p4) and issued a contractor short-list. The three companies still in the bidding are Spain's CASA (part of EADS), Lockheed Martin of the US and SPAR Aerospace of Canada. The UK's Marshall Aerospace is no longer competing.

The entire cockpit, apart from the engine instrumentation, is to be modernised or improved.
The HAF's avionics requirements include:

- Electronic Flight Information System (EFIS);
- Flight Management system (FMS);
- Electronic Traffic Collision Avoidance System (ETCAS);
- EW systems including a Missile Proximity Warning System (MPWS);
- New radios and radar;
- New weather radar;
- Digital autopilot;
- GPS and Inertial Navigation System;
- Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS);
- VOR/ILS Instrument Landing System; and
- IFF systems.

A SPAR spokesman claimed their experience in similar C-130 upgrades (28 Canadian C-130s upgraded to date with four in production, plus five completed for Jordan) gave the company a unique position. "Ours is the only proven system that's flying and certified," he said.

Lockheed Martin says it will offer "a low-cost solution with potential and room to grow". The company has teamed with Honeywell (as for previous C-130 upgrades) and is offering the Honeywell FMS and other items. Also in the proposal is the Apollo electronic warfare/defensive aids suite. If successful, initial work will be carried out at the company's Greenville, South Carolina, facility with the bulk of the work being undertaken at Hellenic Aerospace Industries Tanagra facility.
