Boost in Beijing defence budget highlights need to track China's progress

Beijing's significant defence spending increase further emphasises the overwhelming need to understand the thinking behind -- and the implications of -- the strategic developments and technological advances China is set to make over the coming years. The People's Republic of China's role and influence on the international stage is on course to increase with significant consequences for the region as well as for NATO and its allies.

In a recently published Jane's Special Report on China's Aerospace and Defence Industry, the author, Dr Howard DeVore, states that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has different perceptions than those of the West on overall US military effectiveness. This is particularly so regarding the US logistics capability, the view of the US as a superpower in decline, and the resulting effects of China adopting a more robust stance against US and Japanese regional forces in scenarios involving, for instance, Taiwan, territorial claims in the South China Sea, and Korea.

This strategically vital report offers you detailed, authoritative analysis of China's current aerospace and defence industrial base, together with expert projections of possible future scenarios. For each military theatre you'll gain assessment of R&D and production infrastructure, together with details of currently deployed and exported systems. The impact of foreign technological assistance is extensively analysed, together with details of China's own technological proliferation.

The report complements an earlier publication written by the same author, China's Aerospace Industry Special Report, which was extensively referenced in the May 1999 Congressional Report US National Security and Military Concerns with the People's Republic of China, also referred to as the Cox Report .
