28 March 2001
USN commissions Winston S Churchill

The US Navy (USN) commissioned its 31st Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, Winston S Churchill (DDG 81), on 10 March 2001 at a ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia. It is the fifth USN warship to be named in honour of an Englishman; the only one in active service to be named after a foreign dignitary.

The USS Winston S Churchill is the only USN ship to have a permanent UK Royal Navy (RN) officer assigned to its crew: Lt Angus Essenhigh will serve as the ship's navigator. Another first is the installation of the Mk 45 Mod 4 medium-calibre advanced gun system, which is designed to give accurate fire at a range of over 60nm using the Extended-Range Guided Munition.

Commanded by Cdr Michael T Franken, the USS Winston S Churchill will be part of the US Atlantic Fleet and will conduct a variety of sustained operations from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection.

Among the dignitaries who attended the ceremony in Norfolk were UK Ambassador to the USA Christopher Meyer; Janet Langhart Cohen, the wife of former Defense Secretary William Cohen who is also the ship's sponsor; and Lady Mary Soames, Churchill's last surviving child, who is honourary sponsor for the UK.
