While we're still not sure if this game is coming to US shores (we sure hope it does), we can't help but be excited about the next version of Phantasy Star Online. With new creatures, new quests, new areas and new MAGs, there's a lot to like about what we'll see in the game. Although it'll do us little good if we can't really follow what's going on because it's all in Japanese.
Sonic Team posted some new media on its official website. The pictures are small, so we blew them up (which makes them look blurry), so we apologize. After running the site through an online translation service we got a few more details, but little that's solid (online translations leave quite a bit to be desired).
The addition will feature new levels and even nighttime maps. A new mode of play, "Ultimate," will take the game beyond the difficulty levels currently available, and some items will only appear when the game is played in Ultimate mode. The mode is aimed at players working up to level 200.
One of the more exciting aspects of the game is the new lobby, which is not only a new area for players to hang out in, but supports as many as 12 players in a soccer-like game where players kick a ball around a field attempting to score goals. We're not sure exactly how this will work as far as finding players to play with and letting spectators into the game, but it sounds pretty damn cool.
PSO Ver. 2 will also introduce some all-new MAGs, and from some of the screenshots, there are some pretty cool ones. There are even MAGs that look like a Dreamcast -- we previously thought these might be fake images, but they're on Sonic Team's site, so we acknowledge that they must be real. Which we think is one of the coolest things ever.
Needless to say, PSO Ver. 2 sounds like a winner, and we're still praying that Sega will bring the game to the states. Translation shouldn't be too much of a problem, since we're sure most of it has already been translated in the original PSO. But localizing takes time, so it's unlikely we'll hear for sure for a while. We'll keep you informed of any new developments in this area, however.
