When we received a movie poster for Steven Speilberg's upcoming film, A.I., we didn't think much of it. However, on the back of the poster, we found some letters had silver circles around them while others had gold squares. Intrigued, we set about decoding what seemed to be a hidden message. When read from right to left going from top to bottom, the silver-circled letters spelled out, "Evan Chan was murdered" while the gold-squared letters revealed that "Jeanine was the key."

Game Boy Advance: Pokemon Edition 4/11/01 15:03


Nintendo's never been one to shy away from pushing the limits of a license in order to maximize profits -- it's what they do best. Case in point is the latest edition of the Game Boy Advance, dubbed Pokemon Edition. Taking a more subtle approach than their Pikachu plated N64, the sure-to-sell handheld features a silvery shell with a reflective finish, which makes the Game Boy reflect different colors from different angles. The only other additions include two small silhouetted images of the perennially popular Pikachu and Pichu characters, and a limited edition Pokemon themed package, sure to make this the must-have accessory of the year.



Retro Cuts Continue 4/11/01 14:37


IGN Cube has just reported that Retro Studios, a Nintendo second-party development team, has just laid off three more programmers. This comes not too long after a massive round of layoffs and the cancellation of several Retro products. It's suspected that Retro extended itself too far with several products in the pipeline, and the cutbacks and game cancellations were meant to strengthen the company's current high-profile titles: Metroid and an unnamed RPG. EA Sails Into History 4/11/01 14:29


Electronic Arts has announced that it will release Sub Command, a brand new PC submarine simulation allowing the player to choose from many of thw world's deadliest subs, including Akula, and Seawolf attack class submarines. The game, set in present day, will feature full 3D graphics and is due for launch in summer. The game is being developed by Sonalysts, makers of 688 Hunter Killer.

At this point, any news on Gamecube games is good news, and right now it's Stuart Little. Activision just announced that it has signed an exclusive agreement with Sony Pictures Consumer Products, which will give Activision the right to develop games based on the Stuart Little franchise for the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Gamecube. The company also obtained rights to do the same for Stuart Little 2, coming in 2002.

Indrema Dream Dies 4/11/01 09:01


Indrema president John Gildred, has told Video Business magazine that the Linux-based Indrema L600 console is no more. The system, powered by a 600 MHz CPU and GeForce graphics had tried to lure developers with the promise of open source. However,a lack of interest from game makers and venture capitalists means that the company will lay off its remaining 50 or so staff this week.



Toshiba Spins Off PS2 Chip Division 4/11/01 08:55


Toshiba has spun out a division to be known henceforth as ArTile Microsystems to target embedded applications for its Emotion Engine-based chip line, formally known as the TX79 chip. Embedded applications, which can include anything from set-top boxes to fuzzy logic for washing machines, have always been seen as a goal during the development of the PS2 CPU. The newly formed company will be based in San Jose, CA.
