The genre can trace its roots back to the earliest writings in our history. Tales of beings with super (or supernatural) powers have grown with us, and may even have been responsible for our growth. After all, would people like the Wright Brothers have strived to find a way for man to fly, if it weren't for tales like those of Icarus who angered the gods by flying?
