What are you comparing LA to? Maybe you aren't finding the best places. I've lived in NY, New Orleans and the bay area, and I think LA competes with all of them. Each city, of course, excels in some respects and sucks in others; LA offers more in the way of greasy dives and out of the way places than high profile haute cuisine, but as far as overall chow, I think it's quite good.
