Message: | Personally, I like the duck at QuanJuDe and have never found it dry. I found the meat usually very moist, and the skin crispy. I also like the way they serve the meat with tianmianjiang (sweet flour sauce) rather than with hoisin sauce, and the round sesame cakes, kong xin bing, are fantastic. Since the change in management of the restaurant, most of the more interesting dishes at QuanJuDe are no longer available, but the guo-tieh/potstickers are as good as any (they come bunched together, literally stuck as to the side of the pot) and Deerfield Garden in Monterey Park serves them in a similar style. If I were to eat at VIP there are so many wonderful Southern dishes and preparations, even for duck, that I'm sure I'd rather try some more unusual dishes. Also, the Yuecai/HongKong/Cantonese restaurants in Santa Monica all went on that X.O. trend (green beans with X.O. sauce) that I'm not really a fan of. |
