I agree with what others have said. Some of my favorite standbys are:

Thai Princess is easy for weeknights and often very tasty, located on Beach, just south of edinger, in the Pavillions shopping center. I like the duck curry. Most entrees less than $9.

I can’t remember the name, but there is a recently opened italian place in Olde World (Gothard and Center- behind the mall) I know the location sounds scary but they have some really satisfying dishes. I liked the bass special and the salmon. Though it’s not cheap in my world view (around $10 for pasta dishes & peaking out at $16 for specials) but all entrees come with salad, a side of pasta, side of spinach, & one other veg I think. The owners are trying very hard to please.

Los Barcos (on Beach almost all the way to PCH, in the Pick-n-save strip) for the usual (but tasty) fast food mexican. I always get the carnitas platter.
Also in the same strip is a very family-style, comfortable Italian sandwich/deli/restaurant called Randazzo’s. Very nice owners who one time gave all the customers freshly baked, warm chocolate-chip cookies just because they were hot from the oven. Food is eggplant parm sandwiches, lasagna, meatballs, pasta sandwiches, etc. Very reasonably priced.

The boyfriend recommends the Gypsy Den (in the lab on Bristol, west side of the str, s of the 405 for sandwiches at lunch and the Side Street Café (1799 Newport Blvd , just south of Triangle Square) also for inexpensive sandwiches and lunch specials.

For breakfast in Costa Mesa, I like the Omelette Parlor (179 E 17th St ), which is pretty dependable if not outstanding.

For Santa Maria style bar-b-q, Lou's Oak Oven on Brookhurst and Hamilton.

And finally for ramen, and probably my favorite restaurant in the area, I really enjoy Ebisu at 18940 Brookhurst St. Also rec their katsu curry.
All places are less than $10/person except for the place in Oldeworld.
