Alejo's has very good food, but it has what politely would be called a *very* casual atmosphere. If you are looking for something special, yet not too taxing on the wallet, here are a couple of recommendations:

TAYLOR'S STEAKS - This is in Koreatown. It has an old-LA, 40's atmosphere, rather clubby, with excellent midrange priced steaks. The salad and potato are included (unless you order the Molly Salad, an excellent salad named after a waitress that is worth the extra couple of bucks) so unlike many pricey steak houses, everything is not a la carte. It may not be the most romantic of atmospheres, nor the fanciest, but I have never taken anyone there who was not delighted (and I have dragged quite a few people to Taylor's)! Be sure to ask for a booth, not in the bar area, when you make a reservation.

PACE - This is a rustic place in the hills on Laurel Canyon Blvd. that has very good food and a quiet, romantic atmosphere. It has wood grilled pizzas, steaks, chicken and seafood. I have been three times and enjoyed each visit immensely. (It is on the LA side of the hills, about halfway up the hill from Sunset Blvd)

ALTO PALATO - This would be one of my two choices for a reasonable, romantic Italian dinner. The room is large, so the tables are not squashed together, and the food, particularly the pizzas, are excellent. (It is on La Cienega north of The Beverly Center.)

IL PASTAIO - Unlike Alto Palato, this restaurant in Beverly Hills is small, so the tables can be close. But the food is remarkable. Among other things, they have some of the best Risotto I have ever been served.

LUCQUES - This is the priciest of any on the list, but it is my favorite restaurant in LA, and compared to similar restaurants, such as CAMPANILE (also excellent, but very expensive) it is fairly reasonable. Great atmosphere, great food, friendly service -- the steak for two is the best piece of meat I have had in LA. I love Lucques! (Melrose, east of La Cienega.)
