ah, but what about El Colmao (on Pico and Normandie, i think)? it's no roadside stand, with booths and a jukebox and hundreds of chandeliers...

but the cubano especial (ditto goes for the medianoche) is one of the best i've had: both roasted pork and ham and cheese. i don't think there's mustard or relish, but there are pickles and, here's the thing, you must ask for the homemade salsa to put inside. it's dark green, tart, and the spice has a depth i haven't experienced in quite awhile. eaten with their platonic version of the cafe con leche (these old-time waitresses know how to make perfection--you could balance a quarter on top of the foam)...mami! i must go and have one.
