the zagat guide isn't for everyone, but it can be useful. it has addresses, phone numbers, etc., and gives you a general idea about the restaurant. does it leave a lot of restaurants out? you bet! so does every guide. will you agree with the ratings? of course not. everybody has there own opinion.
 
the top ratings generally are for those that are the most expensive - l'orangerie, patina, valentino, chinois on main, a couple of sushi restaurants, etc. a few "hole in the walls" also have favorable ratings - i.e. la super rica, uncle bill's, john o'groats, etc.
 
my biggest gripe with zagat is that it has a natural bias towards more expensive restaurants - they get more favorable ratings.
 
anyway, take zagat for what's it worth. it covers mostly high end, chains, and popular restaurants. many of our beloved "hole in the walls" aren't in there. but seriously folks, how could they be?
 
by the way, they do take write-in's but won't include them unless they get a significant number of votes.
