There are several in/near Pasadena I'm checking out. The Pie'n'Burger on California, just east of Lake, is pretty good, but a tad pricey and just a little hooked on its own legend. The Reyn on North Lake, between Villa and Orange Grove, is the real deal, open for breakfast and lunch only, breakfast all day, really good original but trad-style menu items and cheap(ish). Fox's, up Lake in Altadena (just north of Mendocino) is also excellent, in the family-run breakfast-and-sandwiches category. More of a fullbore cafe/restaurant is Cindy's on Colorado (at Loleta) in Eagle Rock: corned beef hash and eggs is just so-so but cheap, but the huevos rancheros and the burgers are excellent, as are the fries.

But the VERY BEST to date is in the desert: Rusty's, in Victorville, on Amargosa Rd. just off Palmdale Rd. Again, open only until 2 or 3 pm, but with fabulous cold sandwiches (including roast pork - yum!), great potato salad and the friendliest service imaginable. Gonna try to get up there for breakfast someday - they have a list of about six different three-egg breakfast skillets, all for $5.50 each, that need some investigation...
