Well, I live right near Sunset and used to until very recently go to Saddle Ranch at least 3 times a week. It's the only popular bar\restaurant\club\etc... on Sunset that I find both comfortable and unpretentious. I despise Dublin's where they make you feel like cattle and Miyagi's makes me nauseous. That whole faux Japanese restaurant\food has got to go. Another real welopming hole in the wall is Max's on Fairfax. Nice bartenders, reasonable drinks and parking in the back?! What more could you want?
Boardners is also an alright spot since the place is big and dark and comfortable. Canters Kibbitz Room is a cool dive at times as well. For martini's and mixed drinks I also like Liquid Kitty in west L.A. I've never been to Malone's even though I live with a few miles from there and always drive by there, but I've always been meaning to check the place out.
