Just remembered what was in the other little bowl presented to my father from Mako. They were these tiny whole squids called hotaru-ika caught off the coast of the japan sea in the Ishikawa prefecture. They are very seasonal and what's more peculiar about them is that they shimmer or give light at night. Apparently during the week or so that they're spawning, whole sections of the sea shimmer in the darkness. Sounds magical. Anyway, the squid was served raw in a vinaigrette and as delicate as a squid could be.

Another course I forgot to mention were the raw oysters. Enormous and tasty.
