It also helps to be a little more specific as to where you're looking -- there was a lengthy thread some time ago when some people insisted that the West Side extended as far as Long Beach; people in Topanga ask for a good Chinese restaurant and are urged to visit Monterey Park (a good choice, but likely farther than they'd want to go for lunch, for instance) and so on.
 
Same goes when you're responding: not everybody lives near you, so it's a good idea to give an approximate location of the place you're talking about, if not the specific address.
 
Many seasoned Chowhounds haven't figured this out, yet, but keeping both in mind would place you among the elite.
