that is precisely how i like my steak done as well - sans mustard powder, just salt and pepper for me.
 
but in answer to the original questions, i think those people just don't know any better AND it's a matter of their bad opinion. i'm sorry, but i'm not a believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
 
you were very a gracious host because i would have simply said no, and would have welcomed them to ruin their steaks at their own leisure.
