Here is some more information, from a Taiwanese friend. I have not revised his text.
 
There is sexism involved in the naming. "bo1 ba4"
is the Hong Kong slang for big breast and the fenyuan (zhenzhu) is just like nibble. Nibble and breast make milk that is why it called "bo1 ba4" naicha.
 
There was a dispute about who first inveted this, Taiwanese or Hong Kongese. Some says that it was the Taiwanese who invented first and trnasmitted it to
Hong Kong. Some arge that Taiwanese invented zhenzhu naicha, which is not sexy at all, but the Hong Kongese, like dealing with other business, tained it with the sexy name boba. Now, it becomes one of the international
culture. Anyway, count it as one of the contributions of the Taiwanese, who should have been rewarded a Nobel Peace award.
