Call it a homecoming when Kentucky's Tantric join up with fellow Bible-belters 3 Doors Down during the final leg of the Mississippi band's U.S. tour.
Starting April 20 in Easton, Massachusetts, Tantric will take a break from headlining their own tour to support a few dates with Southern-fried supermen 3 Doors Down (see " New Songs, Drum Jams Planned For 3 Doors Down Tour"). Tantric's appearances with 3 Doors Down — the band behind the radio hit "Kryptonite" — follow dates with Kid Rock and fellow grunge revivalists, Dust for Life.
Tantric are currently riding a wave of success with their upwardly mobile modern-rock single, "Breakdown." At #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, the single is the first from the band's eponymous debut. "Breakdown" will also be heard in the upcoming Sylvester Stallone movie, "Driven."
The Toby Wright-produced Tantric marks a coming out for the band who rose from the ashes of Travis Meeks' Days of the New (See "Tantric Emerge from Days of the New").
"Where Days shows were more secluded and separated from the audience, [new lead singer] Hugo [Ferreira] is a master at getting the crowd involved with the show," guitarist Todd Whitener said in regard to what fans can expect. "Hugo is more of a David Lee Roth-type character than a cracked kid in the corner."
Meeks abruptly relieved Whitener, drummer Matt Taul and bassist Jess Vest of their Days of the New duties in November 1998.
"We went from opening for Metallica, and feeling like we had everything and more going for us, to picking up job applications at Arby's," Whitener said of his firing.
Instead of resting on their laurels — or on their burger-flipping jobs — the trio took advantage of the opportunity to make a fresh start. "We felt stripped of something we'd worked hard to achieve, and we wanted a second chance," Whitener said.
Asked whether they would be performing any Days of the New material on their upcoming dates, Tantric offered a resounding thumbs down. "Even if we could do it [legally], we would choose not to," said Whitener. "I can't even listen to the album anymore," he elaborated. "It brings up feelings like seeing an ex-wife's picture."
Such feelings will probably be roused again when Tantric shares the stage with Travis Meeks and his new Days of the New bandmates at Atlanta's Music Midtown Festival on May 5.
Then on May 3 it's back to business as usual when Tantric resumes their headlining duties in their Louisville, Kentucky, hometown.
