Katsu-Ya (Ventura & Colfax), hands down. Great fresh fish, maybe half a notch below Nozawa but 30-40% cheaper (+ no attitude). Also, Chef Katsu dreams up wonderful specials -- from tempura-cooked raw salmon roll in pink onion sauce to an astoundingly simple, wonderful baked crab hand-roll.
 
The only problem -- Zagat found it (scored 26), so it's now way too crowded.
 
PS -- Their lunch special -- 8 pieces of sushi, half cal/spicy tuna roll, half-order of udon/tempura/green mussels -- is the best bargain in town for $7.95 (an extra buck for albacore instead of hokki clam, if you happen to swing that way)
