Message: | Based on an e-mail message from Peel and a conversation with a fellow who appears to manage the bakery adjacent to Campanile, it appears that (1) Peel will be dividing his time between Campanile and Jar, a new venture just up the street from Campanile, and (2) the purchase of the La Brea Bakery will permit Silverton and her associates to set up a second parbaking facility on the east coast, to provide even more unsatisfactory, doughy bread at unreasonable prices to the huge market there. Let us all keep a steely gaze fixed on both Campanile and the La Brea Bakery next door: Silverton and Peel are capable of truly great work, but it's vigilance of the sort only a dedicated gang of gourmands, gourmets and chowhounds can provide that will fuel their dedication. |
