Message: | Drove by this place and saw a gaggle of people there, with lines going out the door. We were curious, so we stopped and went in. After squeezing through the crowds, finally made it to the front of the line to see the bakery displays. WOW! What scrumptious looking cakes, fruit tarts, mousses, flan, cookies, breads, meat pies, sandwiches...
Sadly, the bakery and cake lines were too long for us to wait in (we had to catch a movie). We did, however, get in the sandwich line and ordered a few "signature dishes": meat pies, chorizo pies, and potato balls. The woman behind the counter was even nice enough to run to the cake section of the store and sneak us two fresh fruit tarts.
The fruit tart ($1.95) was divine. Small, and filled with a whipped cream (rather than a custard) that didn't overpower the fruit. It was perfect, not too sweet or heavy, just as a fruit tart should be. As for the hot food items (all bargains under $1): very good potato balls (mashed potatoes filled with spiced meat, then fried). Meat pies had a wonderfully flaky crust. The only disappointment was the chorizo pie which was very dry.
Has anyone experienced Porto's yet? Their flyer says they've been around since 1960, but I haven't heard of them before. I'd like to go back and try other dishes and would love recs on what to get! I'm esp interested in hearing if the cakes are as good as they look? (They advertised a "Cuban" cake...what is that?) |
