Message: | So Flossie's has come up on this board before, largely in connection with its fried chicken. I made it in on a trip down to see my girlfriend. Lord! I don't think this place has gotten proper recognition.
I picked up fried catfish and hush puppies, with mac and cheese, collared greens, corn pudding. Most excellent! A simple, un-mega-cheesy, but very harmonious and satisfying mac and cheese. Strange lively collared greens - I would have sworn there was MSG in it. In a good way. Lovely corn pudding, very soft, very creamy, very naturally sweet. The fried catfish was great and odd - not tender inside, but meaty and firm, like the fried pompano or fried catfish you get from a Thai or Vietnamese place.
The hush puppies! Salty, crunchy on the inside, very mealy and spiced on the inside. Reminded me of fried Indian curry snacks.
On the whole - Flossie's was one of those places which wasn't "interesting" or "complex", but high on sheer deliciousness. Maybe "yumminess" is the most proper descriptive here. It just made me happier than anything has made me in a long time - I think the happiest I was since my Yongsusan meal. The hush puppies made me vocalize.
I chatted up the very pretty lady behind the counter. Told her I was visiting my girlfriend in San Diego, told her the girlfriend was from North Carolina. "What should I bring her? Dessert-wise."
"Well," says the pretty lady, "I'm an awful big fan on the banana pudding."
Amy, in San Diego, declares that the peach cobbler is really excellent, very fresh and clearly made with love.
The banana pudding - which is bananas in custard topped with Nilla wafers - is really great. "The best restaurant banana pudding ever - maybe the best banana pudding ever," says Amy. The banana pudding grows in my memory.
"You gotta take me there when I come up to LA," says Amy.
On the way back from SD, I stopped in for some fried chicken. It was pretty good. Midday, so I don't think things were at their freshest.
Flossie's is on Redondo Beach Boulevard, a little east of the 405, in a minimall on the southeast corner of an intersection.
