Message: | Franklin, Given your expressed Teutonic tastes, I thought I should throw a couple of new bones your way. Gustav's Jägerhaus is just down the street from me here in Anaheim. Can't go wrong in a city founded by Germans, can ya? Gustav is a hoot, and the food is straight outta der Schwarzwald. The addy is 2525 E. Ball Rd., immediately west of the 57 Freeway, 714.520.9500 If you were to turn east from that same Ball Rd. offramp, tucked in behind the Anaheim Auto Plaza is the Phoenix Club. Turn right on Auto Center Dr., then another right on Sanderson Av, and it's right there (1340 S. Sanderson Ave., 714.563.4164). For better or worse, we're in prime time Oktoberfest season, and the PC is usually at its most crowded. The main restaurant in the PC is called The Loreley. Although the setting and menu here are more formal, I prefer Gustav's, but your mileage may vary. Now, here's your chance to take one for the Chowhound team. In Pomona, well-known hub of all things German, is an anomaly which has survived against all odds for as long as I can remember, the Berliner Kindl (1626 W. Mission Bl., 909.629.1963). Despite the fact that I grew up in Diamond Bar, the adjacent city, and have always sought to nurture the curious Chowhound within, I have never actually been to the Berliner Kindl. The fact that is has survived for many years in what is now a redundant sea of taquerias is enough for me to recommend you give it a try. I did stop outside once to ogle the menu, and the fare looked quite authentic. Admittedly, these are a bit of a schlep, but since you demonstrated your brazen gall in driving from Chi-town to Milwaukee for a German jones, this would be decidedly milder by comparison. I'm crossing my fingers that these aren't already in your experience, and I hope one or all of them provide you with the authentic quality dining experience you seek. Guten abend, Kriss
