Message: | Interesting analysis, but I think you miss one thing. A desert island list is not a "best of" list. My list of what I think are the ten best restaurants in LA would be different from the list I gave here. First, a desert island list is more diverse, even if you think all of the best restaurants in LA serve French, it's doubtful that you'd want to eat that everyday. Second, the lists include a lot of comfort food that may or may not appeal across the board. Who would give up their favorite pizza since childhood or the place they eat at when they need to feel good. I listed several places I go to weekly and could not live without. Are there better places? probably (though I doubt it). But could I live without my weekly jaunts, it would be tough.
Thus, for the places that were mentioned several times, it says something about quality but also about uniqueness and about personal feeling toward these places (which you alluded to -- by the way, my list did include a Central American).
