The list by woo! above is pretty good. A few others:

Jongwaard's Bake & Broil in Bixby Knolls on Atlantic is great for breakfasts (terrific baked goods) and is my favorite "homey" kind of place for any meal. Very friendly, sometimes a wait, but worth it. Great pies.

Johnny Rebs--southern-style barbeque joint on Atlantic near Del Amo. Peanut shells on the floor and very good southern style food, excellent fried catfish (all you can eat Tuesdays & Thursdays).

Kamal Palace--the best Indian place in LB, in Marina Pacifica underneath the Pier 1 Imports store. A good alternative if you don't want to drive over to Little India in Artesia.

555 East--downtown, the best steakhouse in LB, better than the Madison, IMHO.

El Ranchito--terrific Mexican in a not-so-great neighborhood in North Long Beach, on Long Beach Bl. Outstanding carnitas.

There really isn't a "great" restaurant in LB, but plenty of good ones. I agree that the best overall is probably Frenchy's, but I have yet to try Delius, which has a prix fixe menu and is aiming for gourmet status (without the pretention that term can imply sometimes).
