For breakfast try Pierre LaFond on State Street, with a branch in El Paseo and in Montecito. I like sitting out on State Street and people watching. This is a gourmet deli type of place, but my favorite in SB for breakfast. Great baked goodies, if all you want is a bagel, croissant, muffin or the like with your latte, or you can have a full breakfast. The blueberry corn meal pancakes are especially wonderful.
 
My favorite for dinner is the Palace Café on Cota Street, just off State. It's Creole-Cajun. I think there's discussion on this, and other SB places someplace down on the board.
