Message: | The San Gabriel Superstore, on the west side of San Gabriel Boulevard between Valley Boulevard and the 10 freeway, is terrific. (The address is 1635 South San Gabriel, and the phone number is 626 280-9998.) It principally caters to a Vietnamese clientele (note the vast supply of piping hot cartons of soybean milk), but appears to have everything offered for sale at the Ranch 99 markets and a lot more, at consistently lower prices. When I was there on Saturday the twenty-eighth of July, the place was teeming with shoppers, the soy bean sprouts (0.65 per pound) were much nicer than what I got at 99 a week earlier, the watercress was three (lovely) bunches for a dollar, the Chinese wine selection was intriguing, and the aisles went on and on and on. I stopped at Lollicup Tea Zone on my way out and had a terribly oversweetened mugua niunai (papaya milk) and a delicious se se buding douhua (four color pudding--#20 on the menu). Next time I'll try the fresh sugar cane juice ($1.85). Though this shop bills itself as a 500 cc place, the servings are considerably smaller than that. Boba teas, paomo teas, fruit juices, shaved ice and so on are all available. |
