As a matter of fact, Bristol Farms stopped selling Kobe beef some time ago. They now offer Wagu beef, which is from cattle bred and raised in Idaho or some other cattle-raising region.

Wagu beef--I'm told--is bred from cattle imported from Kobe, presumably pre-mad-cow. They are raised in the same manner as Kobe cattle. I had a chance to try some recently at Campanile when they were honoring Charlie Trotter. The menu referred to it as Matsuzaka beef, and it's amazing how beefy and succulent that three-ounce piece of meat was.

I hear Wagu beef goes for $65 per pound, which is half the price of imported Kobe. Hey--half price! Can't beat that.
