The gravy was thick, but that may have been owing to the mucilage and spackling paste.
 
Actually I rather like a chicken fried steak every few years. One of those guilty pleasures that dates from childhood. (There used to be this funky place called The Blue Saguaro on the outskirts of Tucson that served it.) But, as you say, there's probably no such thing as a "good" one.
