i am puzzled that you guys use this term in LA. when i lived in SF, it was "jook", just as in chinese. i don't know where this piece of menu-speak came from, but i am tired of explaining the term to chinese-american friends who come to visit me in hong kong. there is some mass-delusion in asia that americans actually use this term!
 
it seems to be a UK term, by way of hindi. how did LA end up on the british standard?!
