Letters from Homesick West Texans
San Angelo Central Class of '77 reunion From: Maggie Mathis mag@glx.glx.net Could you please remove my "old" bulletin board note so that I could put up another one? I've finally got a new e-mail address. Thanks, From: Lewis Elder lelder@galena-park.isd.tenet.edu I would like to thank you for your Web page. I was born and raised in San Angelo and moved to Houston almost thirty years ago. My Mother and brother still lilve in San Angelo, and I really appreciate your page. It gives me a little touch of my past to be able to keep up with what is going on back home. Thanks again. From: OWEN YOCHAM owen@tln.net I was raised and lived a the small little town called Rankin. I moved to northeast Indiana in 1989. Since then I've kept in contact with my family and friends in and around Rankin to keep up with what's been going on. I've always pondered the thought of how I could get the Standard-Times up here, but that's about as far as it got. I receive my home town paper "The Rankin News" and it keeps me up to date pretty well. My Granddad, the late Ed Guy Branch, always got the Standard and the first thing he would do would turn to the obituaries to see if he was in there. You had to know my Granddad to know how great a man he was. Any way, I'm getting off the subject a little bit. My mother, Mona Sue Yocham, always brings me a copy of the Standard when she comes to visit, and I go thru it front to back after I've checked out the obituaries. Just wanted to let ya'll know that this is pretty neat finding the Standard-Times on the Internet. Adios, From: Ernest Otho Hesterly hesterly@gte.net I spent about a 1-1/2 years in San Angelo working with some good folks in the steel and armored car industry. I also worked with some fabulous folks at Harris Ave. Baptist Church. If anyone reading this feels the inclination, please contact Robert Webb, the pastor there and let him in on the West Texas homepage and our address here on the net. Thanks in advance for your help. Ernie & Teresa Hesterly From: Teresa (Starkey) Shaw dshaw@airmail.net Love your web site. I discovered Standard-Times online about four months ago and I visit everyday. Now it seems like I never left. My name is Teresa (Starkey) Shaw and I am a graduate of Lake View class of `84. I live in Dallas with my husband Danny and our four wonderful children. It's nice here but the people are not as friendly as everyone in West Texas. We were in San Angelo in July `96 and the first place we went was Henry's Diner. No one makes enchiladas like the Hogeda family ( Hi, Rosa). If there are any of my fellow classmates that would like to drop me a line e-mail me dshaw@airmail.net Thanks again, From: Ben and Kathy Phelps catintexas@pipeline.com Hi Ya'll !! We are displaced San Angelo natives stuck in wilds of Washington D.C. Up here, in yankeeland, where half the population comes from foreign lands, the most aggressive drivers in the world live, and the highest taxes on earth, I SURE do miss the folks back home. I have read several of the letters to this forum and I agree, there ain't no GOOD Mexican food up here. I have been served enchiladas made with "flour" tortillas, extra bland salas loaded with Chinese spices that taste like soap. To the gentleman living in Lexington,Ky., my husband and I went to "Don Pablo's" resturant (the place with the 50-year-old San Angelo recipes, THEY AIN'T). I also told them about it too, they couldn't even come close to the "worst" Mexican resturant in San Angelo. We live in Falls Church, Va., about 11 miles from downtown D.C. My husband retired from the FAA and took a job with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association in D.C. I moved here in April of '96, but recently got married. We just HAD to go back home to San Angelo to get married, because our hearts are still in Texas. We just wanted to thank you for the "Homesick Page" as well as the Standard Times "Texaswest Homepage". It's great to keep up with what's going on at home. It's nice to be able to read the news and not get the daily body count. (The number of murders, rapes and child abductions, that happens over night.) We would love to be back in the West Texas heat, instead we're stuck in the cold, cold rain/snow. Keep up the good work!!! More homesick San Angeloans, From: Kenny Perez kkperez@startext.net It was great reading about some of the Central High School ex-baseball players who participated in the alumni baseball game. It was also a wonderful day for a ballgame. I was a member of the '76 Bobcat team, and regret that I could not attend such an exciting event due to work obligations here in Arlington. I travel to San Angelo often, and when I drive by the stadium, visions of a wonderful time and the comradere I experienced return to me. I look forward to reading your baseball coverage on the Internet once the season gets rolling. Good Luck to the baseball team! Kenny Perez From: Scott & Katie Cooke scooke@msw0.attnet.or.jp Hi!! Thanks!! From: Ben and Kris Givens bgivens@bravo.overland.net Hello from Ben and Kris Givens at Ft. Davis TX! We've only been here a few short weeks and as much as we love it, we miss San Angelo, too. Grocery shopping out here is a nightmare. Basically folks mail order or go to Odessa ever now and again. Odessa is a mere 170 or so miles away. The first contrast we encountered shopping there is that people aren't friendly like they are in San Angelo. San Angeloans should be proud of their attitude! We miss it. Everyone back home worries about the Republic of Texas people. They stay holed up at the Davis Mountain Resort. One day a helicopter was flying around. Rumors were that it was their Ambassador, Rick McLaren. We don't think much about them or even really care. The people at Ft. Davis are wonderful and quick to let anyone know that they aren't part of this group. Anyway, we feel blessed to be living in this area. We felt the same about San Angelo, too. From: John Trudo jtrudo@worldnet.att.net Have been logging on to your Web page for several months now and it's been great to be able to keep up with the latest "back home." I still try to make it back to San Angelo once or twice a year for the Tex-Mex food fix (apparently unavailable in Colorado) and to see family and friends. I hope to hear from others who share my appreciation of the fine San Angelo environment, especially those from the Central class of 74! John Trudo From: Mandee Wike ninovm@jcave.com Hey fellow West Texans! My name is Mandee Wike and I'm from San Angelo. I lived the last three years of my life in Eldorado, and now I'm stuck up here in Utah. I'm now living with my mother and she's also from San Angelo. I'm 17 and if anybody reads this who knows me or my mother, Teresa Ninov (you might know her as Teresa Wike or Teresa Glasscock) please write us. I'm coming home in February and can hardly wait. People up here in Utah just don't know how to have fun like we did in Texas. We both miss it and our families in Texas so bad. Can't wait to hear from ya! From: Leisa Gooch 1.GOOCH@worldnet.att.net I lived in San Angelo from July, 1995 till July 1995
and I loved it. Houstonians are nice and all, but Houston sure isn't San Angelo. Some day I hope to return to San Angelo... PERMANENTLY! By the way, don't ever take good Mexican food for granted. What I wouldn't give for a Mejor Que Nada here! From: Rick and Tami Choate Neverstop5@aol.com I wanted to thank you for putting the Standard-Times online. I lived in San Angelo practically all of my life and when I moved I didn't think I would be able to keep up with what was happening there. I can only call my family so many times a week! My father told me Angelo was thinking of starting a hockey team. GREAT IDEA! Here in Biloxi, the Seawolves (our team) are finishing its first season. It's been a big hit. If you are interested - go to http://www.MSSeawolves.com. There are some pics of the team in action. Thanks again! Rick and Tami Choate From: Bloxam Family bloxambl@snoopy.bunt.com Howdy! I'm writing from Landstuhl, Germany, a small town right outside Ramstein Air Base. This is great to have home at the touch of a button. I was born and raised in San Angelo and we visit often because of those loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. I am a 1981 graduate of Lake View High School and a 1986 graduate of Southwest Texas State University. I sure do miss the beautiful sunsets, the friendliness of the people, and of course, CINCOS! Leslie (Minor) Bloxam From: Jon Campbell cfasa7@airmail.net Greetings, wool and mohair capitol of the world, I'm an ASU grad ('89). I was also the youth minister at First Baptist Church that year. Team Lava is my legacy at Angelo State for all you intramural fans. I led a lot of Disciple Nows and summer camps in the area. I haven't heard from the land of the 10 minute rush hour in a long time. Drop me an e-mail at cfasa7@airmail.net Jon Campbell (the Doctor) From: David Lewis famtofam@info.london.on.ca In July of 1978 after first year of college, a buddy and I were hitch-hiking across the US to California. In passing through San Angelo I met a young lady, married her two years later and now, 17 years later have five children. We lived in Angelo for quite a few years, but returned to Canada in August 1990. Now I am the director of Family to Family, a humanitarian aid organization working in 37 countries. We simply put western families ( US, Canada, Australia, UK...) in personal contact with Russian, Cuban, and Eastern European families. The western families assist through the occassional care package, the family we twin them with. (www.info.london.on.ca/~famtofam/ ) Well, anyhow, we are all very homesick for San Angelo, (especially Zentner's). I am playing with the idea of creating a U.S. office for Family to Family, and moving back to San Angelo. What do you think? David Lewis From: Mandy Hauschild Magnan mailto:LTLMAGS@aol.com My name is Mandy Hauschild Magnan, and I lived in San
Angelo from 1988-1993. I married Stephen Magnan, who was going through the ROTC program at ASU when I met him (90-92), in 1991 and we moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1993. We are now in Dayton, Ohio and will be moving again soon. I am currently working on a newsletter and alumni association for the high school I graduated at in Brindisi, Italy - so if there are former students hanging out there in San Angelo, I would love to hear from you. Hope to visit soon - and by the way - Dr. Larsen is still a very good optometrist - he has his own office on Sherwood Way now - and I believe Dr. Wright is still at the mall. From: David Wilson DAVID.WILSON-RICH.0188937@nt.com Thanks for the Homesick Page. It's great to once again be advised of West Texas News! I grew up in Iraan, graduated in '69 and when the Braves were on their march to the State Championship this past season, I made it a morning ritual to visit your Web site to get the latest information on the team. I live north of Dallas and getting Iraan news consisted only of scores posted in Saturday's Dallas Morning News and sometimes Sunday. Basketball is big with me as well and I enjoy following Iraan and the Ozona girls. I really appreciate the service. From: Rosalyn Brummett rosalynb@odin.tcac.com I would like to take this time to wish every one who still remembers me from Rowena, Ballinger,Olfen, and San Angelo a very MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. I would also like to thank the Standard-Times for the terrific job they are doing online. I grew up in Rowena and graduated from 'St. Joseph High School there in 1962. My Dad Fred Schmiedekamp kept me informed on the news of the area until he passed away in July of this year. I would love to get e-mail from any of my old schoolmates or friends or even the many relatives I have still there or any where. MY name is Rosalyn Schmiedekamp Brummett---I have Multiple Sclerosis and my computer is my greatest means of travel. Thank you for any response. Rosalyn From: David Ware straightarrow@webtv.net Wow! I really don't know where to begin. I was stationed at Goodfellow way back in 1969-1970, but I haven't been able to get San Angelo, Texas out of my system (not that I would ever really want to). After being half way around the world and back in the Air Force and now as a civilian employee of Uncle Sam, there's still a special place in my heart for San Angelo. Why else, after all these years, when I first got into the Internet would the very first Website I looked up be, you guessed it, the Standard-Times in you-know-where. Not that my present location is substandard, as I live in Honolulu, Hawaii. But, please do me a favor -- keep me in mind for whatever networks you set up on your "homesick news" section. I'd love to hear from most anybody and everybody there in San Angelo who'd like to talk to me by e-mail on the Internet. From: C. Green cgreen1867@aol.com I was amazed and pleasantly surprised to see you on the Net! I grew up in Angelo then stayed in Colorado after the Army. I still miss it, but my wife thinks it's too hot there. My dad still lives there so I get back occasionally. Good luck. C. Green From: Stephanie McCollum Ferguson KFergu6606@aol.com I really enjoy Texas West on the Internet, and this is only my first time to read it! I'm in exile in Indianapolis, having married a wonderful Yankee, but a Yankee employed by Indy-based Eli Lilly & Co. I'd like to know if there are any other expatriate West Texans in Indianapolis. Would you let me know if you hear of any? We could share information on where to get halfway-decent Tex-Mex here. (And halfway-decent is about as good as it gets.) Stephanie McCollum Ferguson From: Oscar Arrieta (524uuslf85@msn.com) I like your home sick page. Is there room on it for e-mail address of exile West Texan Oscar Arrieta from San Diego? My address is 524uuslf85@msn.com From: Frank Abbott (fabbott@admin.hilconet.com) After looking over the bulletin board messages, I think that I may be the closest to San Angelo to write, but I am still interested in hearing from others of our era in San Angelo. I am in Uvalde, but my contact with San Angelo is very limited these days, coming primarily from talking with people at Angelo State. I am the dean of Sul Ros Rio Grande College, an upper level institution with sites in Uvalde, Del Rio, and Eagle Pass. We have about 900 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The longer is stay in education, the more I have come to value the experiences we had at Central. It was a remarkable place, and we can only now come to appreciate how little we understood it. From: Wayne Stanforth wayne@jaber.aorcentaf,af,mil My name is Wayne and I am stationed at Goodfellow but I'm currently TDY with the Air Force in Al-Jaber Kuwait. Just wanted to say "Howdy" to all those people back in San Angelo that know who I am and especially to my wife Diane and sons Kellen and Chris. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and are enjoying the Holiday Season. Sorry I will not be able to spend the Holidays in San Angelo but my heart is with all of you!!! Sincerely, From: Richard Williford
(bogey@webname.com) I have heard nothing of any reunion for the Class of '67, the year the Bobcats won state in football with Gary Mullins at quarterback and Julio Guerrero in the backfield. I'm trying to get plugged in about that. Anyway, I'm going to promote the "Homesick" site on Four11 where I can be found. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE others to get onto Four11 and register there, not only in their index, but in their "perpetual Internet name" service, iName, where I'm "bogey@webname.com"; so long as you address mail to that virtual name, I can change where it's routed as I move among e-mail servers and it never matters. Also, anyone registering on Four11 should list their high school entry as follows to facilitate finding others of their class "San Angelo Central High School '67 SACHS", so they appear immediately on group searches with their year of graduation hanging out. Also, the ladies should not forget to put their maiden names in there somewhere, too, to facilitate others finding them from their class. I've lost several friends I suspect are out there on the 'Net somewhere, but I don't know their married names. Just some thoughts to help centralize the ability for SACHS exes and others to find their classmates. I'm hanging out in Austin doing systems analysis/programming and working some local theatre. I just finished producing/directing/acting in my first full-length script, "A Christmas Cactus" by Eliot Byerrum, a funny, cozy little Christmas detective mystery. You can view some information on it at http://www.io.com/~bogey/rcpac. 'Twould help if you have Adobe Acrobat, BTW. My home page is the root above, http://www.io.com/~bogey. Well, yack, yack, yack - you should know by now it's me! Peace and may you and your family have a very blessed holiday season back in good ole S.A. - Richard W. From: Philip Hendrix
(dinkydee@pac.gte.net) I am a member of the US Air Force. I spent last summer at Goodfellow AFB before being sent to Hawaii. Just wanted to let you folks in San Angelo know that you have a fine city. I'm from Atlanta, spent time in the San Francisco area, and am now in Honolulu. San Angelo is a great place for nice people and a great overrall atmosphere. You just need to turn the heat down a little in June! Phil Hendrix From: Carol Forbess
(cforbess@waveinter.com) I would gladly trade 2 Maine lobsters (I'm 15 minutes from the Maine coast) for a large order of cinco nachos!) (Or a full sky sunset for a view of the sunset through the tall forests of Maine.) It is nice living here, but it isn't West Texas. Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 I'm a transplanted West Texan from San Angelo and have
lived in Central & South America for the past 25
years. Thanks again, Date: Tue, 15 Oct 1996 You bring tears to my eyes to think of such a nice gesture for all of us dislocated West Texans. I miss San Angelo ,the friendly people, the hometown feeling. We are in North Pole, Alaska thanks to AAFES. I still follow my ritual of a cup of coffee and the Standard-Times in the morning... only now it is via the 'Net...It will be exciting to read about everyones' adventures... thanks Doralinda Tamez From: Michelle Manning Evans
(evans@snoopy.bunt.com) Hello there San Angelo, I'm one of your many displaced San Angeloans. This page is really a great idea. It provides the possibility to meet back up with old friends from school and just home in general. This could really help the planning committe when it comes time for those high school reunions. My name is Michelle Manning Evans. I'm a 88' graduate of San Angelo, and if anyone thinks they know me please feel free to e-mail me. Germany can be a lonely place without a little bit of San Angelo at your finger tips. Anyone who's overseas can atest to the fact that this definitely beats Maw Bell's prices. Have a great San Angelo day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 Found your home page this a.m. Graduated from SACHS 1965. Have not been home in years. Interested in finding anyone on the 'Net from class of '65. Vann Bush Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 Dear Friends, As a relatively new arrivee on the Internet, I put in my family name (Pfiester) and was "surfing" the entries---only to come across a death notice in your electronic edition of a Pfiester's death in Fredericksburg earlier in the year. Must be a distant relative I don't know, even though Pfiester is a faily unusual name--although I discovered over 200 Pfiesters in the USA's online telephone book during another "surfing" venture. But I wanted to write you to share one of my earliest memories growing up in West Texas (I was born and reared in Ft. Stockton): going down to my Dad's business (Pfiester Motor Company, the local Chrysler-Plymouth dealership) to find The San Angelo Standard-Times neatly folded after having been already read, cover to cover, every day by my grand dad, Eddie Boyd Pfiester and my Dad, Bunk Pfiester. I think that seeing them intersted in the newspaper every day, from cover to cover, as a young man, helped nurture the interest in books and the written word to such an extent that I finished the University of Texas (at Austin) (undergraduate, 1966, and Law, 1970--when I moved to Los Angeles to be a Senior Law CLerk/Briefing Attorney for Judge Albert Lee Stephens, Jr., then Chief Judge of the U.S.District Court here. And here I've been the last 27 years...... Congratulations to you for being on the Internet!!! I have "bookmarkeded" your address and will definitely come back to catch up on West Texas news, and particularly, the warm feeling always created by the San Angelo Standard-Times. I think it must be in the blood. Best regards R. Edward Pfiester, Jr. Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 Hello fella San Angeloans, My name is Mike Atchison, native West Texan (CHS '81). I enlsted in the U.S. Navy Sept. 1989 and I am currently stationed at U.S. Special Operations Command, MacDill AFB, Tampa, Fl. I am a Data Processing Technician in the Navy. My current assignment has me as the commands Oracle database administrator. I go online almost daily and come here to the Standard-Times homepage to keep up with what is going on in West Texas - this time of the year especially for high school football scores. Prior to going in the Navy I was a journeyman brickmason for my father-in-law L.B. McCrea (McCrea Masonry). I have many projects that I worked on in San Angelo that I am very proud of. One of the last projects that I worked on before enlisting in the Navy was as the brick foreman on the juvenile justice center (a very attractive masonry building). I miss San Angelo and someday hope to come back home. I hope to make it back to visit sometime between now and the first of the year. My in-laws deer hunt Reagan county, and I hope to do a little deer hunting while we are back (the deer in Florida are kind of small and scarce). I'd better include something about my family since my wife is a San Angeloan too. I am married to Teresa (McCrea) Atchison, and we have two children, Tamara, 15, and Brandon, 6. Teresa graduated from CHS class of '79. She is a closing coordinator with a local (Tampa) title company. If there is anyone wanting to contact us, you can
reach us at: I also have played around with creating a homepage, http://home1.gte.net/oradba/ Thanks for the avenue to keep up with San Angelo events. Date: Wed, 02 Oct 1996 Thanks Standard Times for the great "link" to home. We have lived in Anchorage Alaska for 6 years and the Texas West Internet really lifts our spirits and makes us feel like we are almost home. Growing up in Ballinger, the Standard-Times has always been a part of us. It is great to get those scores on Friday night showing those great Bearcat Victories and also being able to keep up with changes in the agri-plex. Keep up the great work and thanks for the "link" to home. Bill and Flora Wood Date: Thu, 03 Oct 1996 I have lived a 1/3 of my life in Texas. Abilene, 2yrs; San Angelo, 5yrs and Austin, 3yrs. I had taken for granted the wonderful selection West Texans have to satisfy big appetites. Lexington (Ky.) has its share of Texish style steak houses such as: Lone Star Cafe and Texas Roadhouse, but none offers true Texas cuisine. Neither offers chicken fried steak, nor do they really know what it is. I was able to order a beef fajita platter at the Texas Roadhouse, however the meat had not been marinaded, and they did not have any picante or salsa to go with it. There is still hope. While driving, I listened to a radio ad for a local Tex-Mex restaurant. The ad said, "we serve true tex-mex food using 50 yr old recipes from", WHERE? "San Angelo, Texas." I was just a little excited. I will keep you posted on the results. If it fails I will be begging for a care package from the in-laws. Date: Thu, 03 Oct 1996 The very first time I got on the Internet I found the SAST. You guys are doing a great job!! I married into the Texas family 13 years ago. When I refer to Texas family I mean that everyone there is like one big family. My wife's family are the Millicans and the Caseys of Robert Lee. I miss not getting to visit them as often since we moved to PA. Keep up the good job and look forward to reading the Standard-Times, daily. Thanks. P.S. If you see any of the Casey's or the Millicans in R.L. say hi from Dave, Pam, Emily, and Jarrod Hoover. Date: Thu, 03 Oct 1996 I am a former resident of Iraan, and now I am down here in Aggieland. I have not been back to West Texas in over a year, but since I have found SAST on the web, I can keep up with things. Probably what I use the most is checking to see how Iraan is doing in football, and also all the other West Texas teams. Thanks and keep up the good work! Gig 'Em, Brandon Vaughn '97 From: S. Craig Davis
(aggie.sjt@worldnet.att.net) We just found the Standard-Times on the Web. It's great to have a direct connection to our hometown via the Internet. Finally, a place to go to on Saturday morning for six-man scores! >Craig & Tresa Davis From: David Wilde
(dwilde@phoenix.net) Subject: Ray in Aggie land Being a former student of the Aggieland school of A&M, I must submit that Ray has to be one of the many best people on Earth, an Aggie, and being from San Angelo. Once I found the S.Times on the net it became my opening home page. I have said it before and will stand by the statement, San Angelo is one of the most friendliest towns in the state and perhaps the world. On this side of I-35, it may be greener, but friendly has a corner on the world out west. R Mon, 30 Sep 96 11:59:17 Hello West Texas, SEMPER FI From: bill.lively@gsa.gov I only recently discovered the Standard Times on the
Internet. I read it to get football scores and the local
news. Thank you for making your paper available on the Internet. Bill.Lively@gsa.gov Date: Tue, 01 Oct 96 Thanks for putting SAST on the Net. I try to read it at least a couple of times a week. When my parents (Bill and Arlena Hinnant) were featured in the paper a few weeks ago, they got calls from several places around the US from ex San Angeloans who read the paper via the Net. It is also good to get West Texas football results. It is difficult here in Aggie land to get any high school football news west of I-35. again, thanks, and I hope you will continue putting the paper on the Web. Ray
