issue fifteen

m : dugo: blood: life: pain: connection
maganda is a literary magazine inviting provocative, dangerous, and explosive poetry/ fiction/ artwork that inflame critical thought and dynamism of pilipino and pilipino american experiences. we seek submissions for issue fifteen that imaginatively explore the theme, dugo [the tagalog word for blood].

life:
reproduction of the mannequin
what paradigm are you trying to breed and whose?
does truth circulate in you body? keep you alive? fuel your growth?
then question truth.
revolutionaries envision a better society. has your generation become anesthetized to cries of peace, war, inequality and justice?

pain:
malignant cancers, cysts and scars on the back of humanity.
do we select which wounds to treat, and do we just treat and never cure? past crimes have often been silenced into a benign state. what pains have continued to bleed beneath the skin of society? does punishment equal justice?

connection:
harmony written in liquid circuits--
the thumping cadence of family, friends, and enemies.
a shared biological commonality--blood--a living solution inherited, shed, and tested. a symbol of sacrifice, a proof of mistake, a price of sacred birth. a hereditary receipt of oppression and victory readily shown to claim possession, a division of us and them. often times forgetting dugo is unlimited to age, race, gender, and creed.


we want you to claim your own voice and utilize this issue of maganda as a site of struggle, resistance, and empowerment. we want materials that explode off the page and challenge our readers to confront the realities facing pin@ys in the contemporary world. we encourage a diversity of voices, which reflect different perspectives and backgrounds of pin@ys, but also show how dugo our history, life, and pain links and weaves the fabric of pilipino and pilipino american community.
