In an instant a year ago Wednesday, the course of life and politics in the United States changed as terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and crashed an airliner in Pennsylvania.

An unfamiliar vulnerability settled on the world's only superpower. The nation's loss was extreme, but so were the bravery of its survivors, the courage of its troops and the determination of a great city, New York, to heal its wounds and to move on in its own remarkable style.
