THEATER

   Stage stuffed with holiday havoc
San Jose's City Lights Theater Company ushers in the holiday season by pairing "Stocking Stuffers," a collection of six seasonal shorts, with "The Santaland Diaries," a monologue on the dark side of life as an elf. As a whole, it's a festive evening of irreverence toward race, religion and the winter revels.

OPERA

   Stunning singing, silly staging
Love triangles are the order of the day at San Francisco Opera's "Alcina," which features a young, good-looking cast decked out like Vogue models.

CIRCUS

   Living up to Cirque tradition
"Varekai" showcases a first-class accumulation of acrobats, jugglers and dancers and is one of the most delightful chapters in the Cirque du Soleil's array of groundbreaking productions.

MUSICAL

Pure Americana flows through energetic 'River'
"Big River" doesn't attempt to re-create the richness of "Huckleberry Finn," the novel it musicalizes, but the Willows Theatre production is a whole lot of fun, and would make an excellent outing for the entire family.
