TOP STORY

How to decorate with your kids
For many families, decking the halls is as much a part of tradition and family lore as the holidays themselves. Including kids in the process makes the decking all the more meaningful. It takes only a bit of effort to go beyond the predictable-if-beloved paper chains and popcorn-cranberry strands.

Redwood can stay near fence
Q After Christmas, I planted a 3-foot-tall redwood tree. It is now about 7 feet tall. There's a new fence, and the tree is now about 4 1/2 feet from the fence. (I probably planted it too close because it looked so small.) Can the tree be moved safely? What month is best? Is there anything else I should know about moving it? Or is it OK where it is?

Uneven paint could cause seeping air
Q We have double-hung wooden windows in our 1940s house. I can feel air leaks around and between some of the windows. Can you give me some tips on weatherstripping them?

DREAMING OF 2003
: The seed catalogs for spring have started to arrive. Here's a sneak peek at the new offerings from Thompson & Morgan, the 147-year-old company based in Jackson, N.J.
