   Food bank helps family find stability, hope
Shortly after a divorce, and with two toddlers, Debra Ali of Mountain View went to work at a catering facility. A 100-pound truck door crashed on her head, injuring her spine and limiting her ability to work. Now, more than a decade later, she has diabetes and has endured a series of mishaps.

Cool kids
Kyle Terada, 16, is a junior at Palo Alto High School where he is a photographer for the student newspaper, Web site and yearbook. He credits his mother for sparking his interest in photography.

Teacher of the week
Lenore Graves has been teaching for 16 years. For the past four years she has taught fourth grade, fifth grade and a fourth-fifth combination at Oak Avenue Elementary School in Los Altos.

Proud to serve
Catherine Capriles has served eight years with the Palo Alto Fire Department. She says the best part of her job is being with her co-workers whom she describes as her "extended family."

Aram Mardigian, 35, is a chef at Spago in Palo Alto. After moving to California in 1994, he briefly worked for actor Arnold Schwarzenegger at his restaurant in Los Angeles.

   Castilleja volleyball team notches school's best mark
Castilleja School has always had an outstanding academic reputation. But recently, the private girls school in Palo Alto has been establishing itself as an athletic force as well.

Macy's discount called a crime One of two boys who made illegal purchases at Macy's Men's Store at Stanford Shopping Center the evening of Nov. 18 was located after he left the store, was cited for robbery and was turned over to his parents. The boys bought clothing from a friend, a sales clerk who gave them a 75 percent discount. On their way out of the store, they punched a security guard who tried to restrain them, got into a car and sped off.

Exhibit displays more than 500 scenes of the Nativity from all over world
More than 500 crèches from around the world will be on display in Palo Alto from Dec. 7 to 11, in what organizers say is California's largest exhibit of Nativity scenes. The crèche exhibit represent works from 65 countries, and 65 different materials are used to construct the scenes. Last year, the annual event attracted more than 9,000 people, according to Teena James, publicity director for the free exhibit, which is organized by local congregations of The Church of Jesus...

Daughter's beau gets dad mad A 41-year-old Mountain View man who hit, kicked and threatened to kill his 15-year-old daughter's 19-year-old boyfriend was arrested and charged with battery last Thursday afternoon at Los Altos High School, 201 Almond Ave. The boyfriend declined medical attention.

Los Altos Hills to hold holiday party at Town Hall on Dec. 14
Los Altos Hills is planning an old-fashioned holiday event on Dec. 14 at the Town Hall to foster community spirit. Children can make ornaments from natural sources such as pine cones, birch wood and straw. There will also be decorating, other crafts and plenty of cooking and eating.

Aram Mardigian
Age: 35 Background: Moved to California in 1994, settling in Los Angeles and ``trying like hell'' to get his foot in the door at Spago. Mardigian grew up in the restaurant business, working for his dad at his family's restaurant and bar in Albany, N.Y. He started out as a dishwasher. Mardigian worked briefly for Arnold Schwarzenegger at his restaurant in Los Angeles before getting hired at Spago. He has worked for Spago's owner, Wolfgang Puck, for eight years.

Age: 16 Grade: Junior Accomplishments: This budding photographer is contributing his eye and work to Palo Alto High's student newspaper, Web site and yearbook. Kyle also takes photos for his school's cheerleading and dance squads and sports teams.

Arbor Avenue
This quiet, tree-lined Los Altos street was developed in the 1920s when wealthy San Franciscans bought weekend homes near the Los Altos Country Club. Now the trees have grown tall, creating a canopy-like arch over the street, and residents say they value the quiet, rural feel. ``It always smells like you're camping,'' said Leslie King. ``It's just a great atmosphere.''

Palo Alto's city and school liaison committee met Tuesday to consider developing a response for substance abuse issues among Palo Alto children and the coordination of emergency response efforts between the city and the school district.
