49ers' rookie kicker relaxed before pro debut
Jeff Chandler packed his equipment bag a day ahead of time, making sure he had a six-studded cleat for his plant foot and some spare kicking shoes.

Daring to complain
Zeng Dong Ying, a former Seagate Technology assembly-line worker, fit the description of the typical economic migrant eight years ago, when a labor broker in her home town of Zhuzhou in Hunan province recruited her to work at a joint-venture factory making magnetic heads for computer disk drives in Shenzhen.

Sharp shooting sparks Stanford
Since the first day of practice -- check that: since the day Casey Jacobsen and Curtis Borchardt entered the NBA draft -- Stanford has fretted about its lack of scoring punch. Offense would be in such short supply, it reasoned, that defense and hustle would have to carry the season.

Giants lose Bell to Phillies
For the fourth consecutive season, the Giants will need a new regular third baseman. They lost last season's starter Sunday when David Bell accepted a four-year, $17 million deal from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Callahan keeps team focused
The Raiders' canine gene kicked in on schedule Sunday in the desert. Right away they dogged it, tackling halfheartedly and losing focus. It was hot. They were tired after losing to the 49ers in overtime, saving their season on a Monday night in Denver and wreaking Sunday night revenge on New England.

Diagnosis of dumb epidemic dredges up unpleasant lessons
Looking for trouble, walking into it with blinders on, or just being a charter member of the Knucklehead Club . . . What has gotten into everybody? A toxic and highly contagious strain of John Rockeritis?

Sorenstam caps season with 11th win
Playing her best golf when she had nothing left to give, Annika Sorenstam won her 11th tournament of the season Sunday in the ADT Championship, a fitting finish to the best season on the LPGA Tour in 38 years.

IOC set to review ban on visits to bid cities
The most radical Olympic reform enacted after the Salt Lake City bid scandal is back up for debate. The ban on visits by International Olympic Committee members to cities bidding for games will be reviewed at meetings opening today. Some members want the trips reinstated, but the rule probably will be kept.

RAIDERS REWIND
Raiders WR Jerry Porter caught two touchdowns -- one on third down -- as the Raiders built a 21-7 lead. He beat the Cardinals' best cornerback for both catches, so forget talk that he's merely the beneficiary of opponents' concentrating on Tim Brown and Jerry Rice. ``That young lion's growing up,'' Charlie Garner said. ``His mane is showing.''

Wheatley gains a bigger role
Every so often, like Simon and Garfunkel, they share the marquee. Appearing Sunday at Sun Devil Stadium, in a special engagement: Charlie Garner and Tyrone Wheatley. And nobody was happier than Garner to see old Art -- er, Tyrone -- belting out those hits.

O'Neal sparks Lakers to win
Things are getting back to normal for the three-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Shaquille O'Neal scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in his second game of the season, and Kobe Bryant had a triple-double Sunday to lead the Lakers to a 111-99 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Report: Upshaw fined
Raiders Coach Bill Callahan did not confirm -- and, perhaps more important, did not deny -- a report Sunday that he fined defensive end Regan Upshaw one week's pay for an altercation with an assistant coach.

GANNON BY THE GAME
Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon has been a model of consistency this season:

Bucs hammer Packers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took over the best record in the NFL on Sunday and took a big step toward swinging the NFC championship game away from the Green Bay Packers and frigid Lambeau Field.

Top 25: from Jayhawks to Wolfpack
Here is the preseason ballot that I turned in for the Associated Press top 25 poll: 1. Kansas: Jayhawks have replaced Drew Gooden with Wayne Simien (bad) and Jeff Boschee with Keith Langford (good), so don't expect much drop-off.

Dolphins trample Chargers
Ricky Williams had 83 yards rushing at halftime when he lobbied quarterback Ray Lucas for more carries. ``I'm a beast in the second half,'' Williams told Lucas.

Stanford women edge USF
If the Stanford women's basketball team keeps this up, Coach Tara VanDerveer suggested that her hair might turn gray by the end of the season.

No. 1 Duke rips No. 2 Lady Vols
Duke's first week at No. 1 was a rousing success. Alana Beard had 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals to power the Blue Devils (2-0) over No. 2 Tennessee 76-55 Sunday in the inaugural women's Jimmy V Classic.

San Jose State thumps Northridge in opener
Guard Cricket Williams scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half and had six assists to lead San Jose State to a season-opening 76-51 victory over Cal State-Northridge on Sunday at the Event Center.

Leigh survives Seaside; Los Gatos up next
Leigh Coach Shawn Thomas may have mixed feelings about playing Los Gatos next weekend. Thomas was breathless after watching his third-seeded Longhorns edge No. 6 Seaside 24-21 on Saturday night in a Central Coast Section Division III first-round game. But that victory means Thomas will meet his mentor, Los Gatos Coach Butch Cattolico, Friday in the semifinals. Thomas spent three seasons at Los Gatos as an assistant and still holds Cattolico in high regard. The two met on the field for a quick congratulatory...

Piedmont Hills keeps rolling
When Piedmont Hills' Jeremy Jones was forced to discard his torn jersey in the first half, it seemed like his playmaking ability went with it. Jones couldn't find any room to run and was held for negative yards by Yerba Buena's defense in the second quarter.

Bylaws, disqualifications and misplaced blame
It didn't take long last week before Nancy Lazenby Blaser was bombarded with nasty letters and e-mails. Several angry parents characterized the Central Coast Section commissioner as a vengeful, two-headed monster who hates kids.
