Tracing water's troubled path
The pipeline steals across the state like a thief. It burrows inside the Sierra, then slips beneath farmland toward the coast, concealing a silent storm of water. Mostly underground, it is almost always out of sight. From a granite bowl in Yosemite, the Hetch Hetchy water system races downhill 167 miles, then spills into the San Francisco Bay Area, through garden hose and shower head, into every basin imaginable, including the kitchen sink.
