(1893-1981), World War II general. As one of the most respected Allied commanders of
World War II, Bradley led U.S. forces in the North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy invasions. He commanded the Twelfth Army Group, the largest fighting force ever gathered under one leader, from 1944 until the end of the war. Bradley was loved by those he commanded for his awareness of and concern for the ordinary soldier. From 1949 to 1953 he served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in this capacity he supported President Harry S. Truman in relieving Douglas MacArthur as supreme Allied commander in Korea.
