 QT Fact
In 1979 Dr. Laura taught human sexuality courses at the University of Southern California, stating that homosexuality was just another aspect of human behavior. She also favored gay adoption, saying it was better that a child be raised by two loving adults, regardless of their sexual orientation.

The Doctor Is Not Out

Dr. Laura Schlessinger's controversial TV show is launching September 11. QueerTelevision takes the high road by getting the low-down from both sides -- the organizer of Stop Dr. Laura Seattle, one of America's biggest protests against Schlessinger, and a programmer from the station that will air Dr. Laura in North America's most competitive TV market, Toronto. We "biological errors" aim to avoid journalistic ones.

Update: ONtv Cancelles Dr. Laura Show

ONtv was the only station airing the Dr. Laura show that was willing to talk to QT about their decision. They also made a point of sending us their Media Release (below) when they decided to cancel the show due to poor ratings.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 4, 2000

DR. LAURA CANCELLED DUE TO POOR RATINGS

HAMILTON- ONtv announced today that it has cancelled the syndicated TV show Dr. Laura effective October 6 due to poor ratings. The show has suffered from consistently low audience levels throughout Canada and the United States since its debut.

"Our audience has voted and, unfortunately, they've cast a 'nay' ballot for Dr. Laura on television. The latter part of the afternoon is very important to us because it forms the lead-up to our evening news programming and Dr. Laura just isn't delivering the viewers," says Roy Gardner, vice president of programming.

The program currently airs on ONtv in Ontario at 3 p.m. each weekday afternoon, and is also broadcast on CFCF in Montreal, BCTV in British Columbia, and CKRD in Red Deer, Alberta.

Replacement for the show will be temporary until a complete review of available programming can be completed. This January, the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) will hold its annual conference, which will present a number of attractive daytime programming alternatives.

An Open Letter to Dr. Laura
Author unknown

Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors.  They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality.  I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Ten Stupid Things

Dr. Laura really seems to like the number ten and the word Stupid. She has written the books Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives and Ten Stupid Things Men Do To Mess Up Their Lives, and now features The Ten Stupid Things I’ve Said That Have Gotten Me Into Hot Water on her web site. This is a new feature, although one well hidden on her site, so we have provided a link. She also inspired the QT team to pull together another top ten list:

10 Stupid Things Celebrities Do to Mess Up Their Reputation

1. "Shoulding" on the audience
2. Get caught with your hand in the Bigotry Jar
3. Get a black belt in insults
4. Promote yourself as a direct line to God, or at least a Prophet
5. Inflate your credentials. A biology degree is close enough to Psychology isn't it?
6. Pose for naked photos so your lover can sell them to a porn site later
7. Charge, charge, charge for everything you can
8. Promote your hypocrisy as personal progress
9. Back pedal when things get hot
10. Hang up if you don't like a question. There is always another sucker - oops we mean fan.

Scott Blodgett Comments from Segment Producer Scott Blodgett

It’s sometimes hard to believe why someone is popular in our culture and why they maintain that popularity. I really don’t get Howard Stern. Watching Jerry Springer was like watching a freak show of dysfunctional families and as for Tom Green…that’s funny?? But at least these people only humiliate their guests; and the guests or participants in the show usually deserve to be humiliated.

So what about Dr. Laura? Ah yes, the good doctor, the woman who says she preaches, teaches and nags. The woman who has called homosexuals biologically deviant. The woman who said Mathew Shepherd was an instrument of his own death. The woman who has made such derogatory statements about homosexuals that she was censured by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council. The phrase that kept coming up again and again when I was researching this story was: “Dr. Laura is the Anita Bryant of the 21st century. “

Unfortunately, unlike Anita Bryant who was only able to get press coverage when she made outrageous comments, Dr. Laura has a daily forum to spew forth her twisted venom. She is now heard on more than 400 radio stations in the United States and Canada and this fall her new television show will be seen in nearly 170 North American markets.

But while working on this story, I realized that Dr. Laura is in real trouble before the show even makes its debut. Advertisers are dropping from her show faster than pants at a navy-port brothel. Reports leaked from the set of the tv show say tapings are going so badly that audiences are being paid to sit there and act like they really love what she is saying. And then there are the protests. They have taken place at just about every tv station which will air the show.

But this is the television business. Hunter S. Thomson calls it a long hollow money trench…and it is. If Dr. Laura pulls in the ratings, the show will keep going until the bucks no longer roll in. And it’s a fact that the casualty rate among new talk shows is staggering. If you don’t believe me just ask Rosanne, Martin Short, Chevy Chase, Carnie Wilson, Alan Thicke…..need I go on? So the reality is Dr. Laura could be distant memory by this time next year.

And if she really is the Anita Bryant of the 21st century, she may want to be careful. Anita Bryant re-surfaced in the early 90’s in Branson, Missouri. She staged a cheesy stage show at her own theatre but after filing for bankruptcy, the theatre is now owned by a country singer name Moe Bandy who stages an even cheesier stage show. Somehow I could see Dr. Laura in Branson, Missouri….like Homer Simpson said, it’s Las Vegas designed by Ned Flanders.

Keltie Creed QT Crone-icals
There have been far too many people make it their personal mission to publicly express their homophobia and hatred, but seldom do they already have an audience of fans waiting to hear their venom. Perhaps that is why those of us who remember Anita Bryant's campaign keep thinking "here we go again". But this time, the woman in question began with the potential of a world wide audience. An audience that seems to be dwindling, but still far larger than the one available to former beauty queen and singer Bryant.

As I read or hear Schlessinger's comments, they strike a familiar chord - and a discordant one at that.

A bit of history here for those who weren't involved in the queer community in 1977. Anita Bryant was Miss Oklahoma and a runner up for Miss America. That lead to a singing career, and a move to Florida where she had a contract to be the $100,000 per year spokesperson for Florida Orange Juice (which eventually went sour). She too had hopes for a media career. "My lifetime dream has been to have my own television series to entertain and present wholesome subjects to my fellow Americans."

An ordinance had been passed making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in Dade County, Florida. Anita responded by spearheading "Save Our Children", a campaign "to save not only Miami-area children from the evils of homosexuality, but all youngsters in the United States." Anita and her followers were successful in repealing the law, and she then carried the campaign to other states.

Here are a few other things Bryant said. Any of these themes sound familiar?

"Homosexuality is immoral and against God's wishes. Gays are human garbage."
"Miami’s blundering ‘gay’ ordinance is no more a civil rights issue than is the arrest of a drunk for disturbing the peace.”
"[Since homosexuals cannot reproduce], they can only recruit children, and this is what they want to do."
"If homosexuality were the normal way, God would have made Adam and Bruce."

Bryant button Protests and boycotts were organized all over the USA and Canada. Even in an Ontario suburb, my mother got her grocery store to stock alternatives to Florida oranges. Bryant didn't get her show, she lost her sponsorship, and she lost a lot of respect. She added some fans of course, and she certainly made her name famous. But not in the way that she had hoped. Are you listening Laura?
