Skeletons in the Closet

A vampire draws blood from the jugular of his male victim: innocent holiday horror or serious queer erotica? QT sucks new meaning out of Hallowe'en by preying on insights from the world's first anthology about queer fear. Get ready for the skeletons in your closet to be set free. Or at least rattled.

QUEER FEAR

Introduction by Michael Rowe

cover of Queer Fear QUEER FEAR is, at its most elemental point, an anthology of gay-themed horror stories primarily aimed at gay and lesbian horror fans who have grown up, as most of us have, never seeing ourselves represented in horror fiction or films without our sexuality making us either freaks or victims. In this book, you'll meet a wide array of monsters, both traditional creatures of the night like vampires, werewolves, and zombies, as well as all manner of evil magic and urban terrors. The gay sexual orientation of the characters--be they the victim or the aggressor-- is a starting point, indeed a given, against which the horror or the story is arrayed. But make no mistake--this is not a series of politically correct stories geared to making a gay readership feel good. These are full-out horror stories, and their aim is to terrify, to cause the reader--gay or straight--to question reality as he or she knows it.

There has never been an anthology like QUEER FEAR. Traditionally, horror fiction has been a primarily straight literary enclave, usually featuring a male aggressor and a female victim, or occasionally a rogue "killer female" who has stepped out of her traditional decorative role. When I was growing up in Ottawa, Ontario in the 1970s, I watched my peers' lives reflected in the horror fiction and film I adored, but the closest thing I ever saw to the sexual orientation I was discovering in myself was the occasional, disposable, sexually neutral or "invert" character, usually a creepy loner, who was never the killer but was usually suspected of the most awful evil. He was generally dispatched without a second glance, and the audience chuckled inwardly at the absurdity of a boy so weak and "weird" being strong enough to be the killer.

Not so in QUEER FEAR, where, for instance, a group of gaybashing teenage boys might pick the wrong victim one night, and find themselves facing a creature older than time; or where the ultimate "psycho lover" might dispose of all his competition by simply, literally, wishing them away; or where a young goth boy might discover a "real vampire" and realizes that the Anne Rice fantasy is far less painful than the reality; or where a man who has lost his lover in the bloody heart of urban violence might search for the ultimate peace of forgetfulness, then return transformed in the light of a bloated October moon, with only the memory of his pain, and a hunger for vengeance...

"These stories," says internationally acclaimed horror author Poppy Z. Brite, "are variously savage, tender, funny, and always whip-smart. We're here, we're queer, we're scary!"

Vamps and Weres

Buster Wilde There is no shortage of images of lesbian vampires and gay villians. For years, the movie industry only showed us as "monstrosities" or as evil "perversions". But now that we slowly are seeing a wider spectrum of portraits of gays and lesbians, we are feeling more at ease about camping up and playing with those very images.

For example, check out Buster Wilde, a comic strip about a gay werewolf. There is also a great list of gay and lesbian Vampire movies at Queer Vampires.

But not only are we laughing at ourselves, we are also delving into darker eroticism. Queer Fear is a male counterpart to the popular Lesbian Vampire anthologies by Pam Keesey. So here is a challenge. Can any of you guys come up with an recipe to match the one below?

Lesbian Vampire Garlic Pasta

Lesbian Vampire Garlic Pasta with Fresh Herbs
By Pam Keesey

  • 1 pound pasta
  • 6 quarts water
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 8 to 16 cloves garlic, coarsely minced
  • 2 cups fresh basil and parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 to 2 cups cream
  • Lemon juice
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • Freshly grated Italian or Argentine Parmesan
Your friends have all tired themselves out and are heading home. It's last call and you're still alone, not at all what you had planned. As bodies sway to the final soft strands of music, you see her. She steps out from the dark depths of the club. She couldn't have been here all night, and certainly not alone. No—you certainly would have noticed her before now. Dark hair, black as coal; eyes the deepest of midnight hues; porcelain skin and lips as red as.... Her black-clad form is moving, lithely, gracefully, and, yes, even seductively, across the dance floor. How could you not notice her?

&#147Are you alone?” she asks. She’s talking to you! Your knees go weak. Your heart is pounding; you feel flushed, overheated, electric. “Shall we get a bite to eat? How about your place?” she says liltingly, enchantingly. You stammer. A question forms in your mind, but can't seem to find its way out of your mouth. She takes your hand and leads you out into the night.

&#147Aren’t you going to invite me in?” she says. You stop. Your voice, which had abandoned you the minute you looked into her eyes, is struggling to be let free.

“Please. Come in,” you say, gesturing grandly, waving your hand across the threshold.

While you search the refrigerator, she pours you a glass of wine. Red wine. She places the glass in your hand. “To the Children of the Night,” she says as you touch your glass to hers. You take a sip, turning back to the task at hand. From the depths of the refrigerator an idea comes to you. But then the question forms in your mind: Do you really want to know?

You plunge 1 pound of pasta into 6 quarts of boiling water Enough for 4, you realize, but you have no idea how hungry you really are. Or how hungry she might be. In a small frying pan, you heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil, adding 8, no 10, how about 12? Damn it all, you add all 16 cloves of garlic that have been coursely minced. If this doesn't work, you think, nothing will.

On a low heat, you gently sauté the garlic, watching it closely as it turns a light, even translucent brown. Your mind wanders to that lovely creature sipping her wine in the living room as you toss the pasta with the sauteed garlic and 2 cups of finely chopped basil and parsley. What if it is true, you wonder as you gently stir in 1 to 2 cups of cream, mixing the pasta and adding the cream until little sauce forms around the pasta itself. Do you really care if it is true?

You taste the pasta, adding just a bit of lemon juice, some freshly ground pepper, and topping it all with freshly grated Italian or Argentine Parmigiana cheese. &#147A little midnight snack,” you announce as you serve generous portions to both yourself and the gorgeous denizen across the table.

Now is the moment of truth. But wait! She doesn’t cringe! She’s not backing away! She twirls her fork amidst the pasta, bringing the creamy forkful to her ruby lips. She opens her moist mouth and takes it all in, chewing ever so lightly, ever so subtly. &#147Delicious,” she says. <br> <br><img src="images/fangs.jpg" width=76 height=91 align="left" alt="fangs" border="0"> You sigh, relaxed, relieved. &#147Such a meal deserves a kiss,&#148 she says. You feel her arms around you, the light brush of her breath on your mouth, her warm lips on your cheek, her creamy, garlic-scented mouth on your neck.<br> She sinks her teeth in. <p> <p><i><font size="-2">This recipe originally appeared as &#147Anti-Vampire Garlic Pasta with Herbs&#148 in <i>Food for Life...and Other Dish</i>, a gay and lesbian celebrity cookbook to benefit organizations providing meals for people with AIDS, edited by Lawrence Schimel (Cleis Press, 1996). He and his husband of fifteen years were walking their dog. I was walking another dog with a friend of mine. My friend's dog tried humping Michael's dog. Feeling a little silly, we joked about it and got to talking. Michael had written extensively for many magazines and spearheaded a few anthologies. He told me about his latest project, a selection of short horror stories with queers in the main roles. I was intrigued. Michael was quite intelligent and clearly a real fan of horror, not just a guy with a good idea. I felt pretty lucky in the park that night. <br><br> The day of the shoot was one of the best times I ever had at work. I almost felt guilty for calling it work. Michael was the best host, and he invited a group of Goths to come hang out with us and help make the place look scarier. I expected the Goths to be shy and maybe a bit sullen - at least that's how I remember my Goth pals from the 80s. Not these ones. These were good time Goths. They were the life of the party. When I looked at the footage after the night of the shoot, the footage with the Goths looked far more fun than scary. <br><br> We also had two of the short story writers, David Nickle and Gemma Files. They were game. Gemma, the famous Toronto film reviewer, even climbed up in a tree for us. Both had some interesting things to say on the nature of fear and their stories. Gemma even confessed that she loves to write about two gay men getting it on. She told me that gay men getting down does for her what two women together do for straight men. She loves the equity of male-on-male action. I don't know if it's always that equal, but I like the notion. <br><br> Ultimately, there are some really good stories in the anthology worth checking out. If you're a horror fan or even a fiction fan, I would give this book a read. If you don't like fiction or horror, then I suggest you check out the book cover, it's pretty impressive. </font> </td> <td width=5><img src="../images/spacer.gif" width=5 height=1 border=0></td> </tr> </table> </td> <td width=1 bgcolor="#000000"> <img src="../images/spacer.gif" width=1 height=1 border=0 alt=""></td> <td width=188 valign=top bgcolor="#FF6600"> <table width=188 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0 border=0> <tr> <td width=188 bgcolor="#FFCC00" valign=top colspan=3> <img src="/images/curve5.gif" width=188 height=25 border=0 alt=""></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=3 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00"> <img src="/images/spacer.gif" width=3 height=1 border=0 alt=""></td> <td width=182 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00" align=right> <img src="/images/spacer.gif" width=182 height=1 border=0 alt=""></td> <td width=3 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00"> <img src="/images/spacer.gif" width=3 height=1 border=0 alt=""></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=188 bgcolor="#FF6600" colspan=3> <img src="/images/spacer.gif" width=1 height=1 border=0 alt=""></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=3 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00"> <img src="/images/spacer.gif" width=3 height=1 border=0 alt=""></td> <td width=182 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00" align=right> <!-- <img src="/images/tellittotheq.gif" width=164 height=25 alt="" border="0"> --> <!--<font face="verdana, arial, helvetica" size=3> <b>Tell It To The Q!</b></font><br> --> <!--<font face="verdana, arial, helvetica" size=1> Got something to say?<br> Call the QTelephone line at<br></font> <font face="verdana, arial, helvetica" size=2><b>(416) 591-7518<br></b> </font> <font face="verdana, arial, helvetica" size=1>or fax us at<br><b>(416) 591-3545</b><br> Email:<br> <b><a href="mailto:interact@QTonline.com" target="blank">interact@QTonline.com</a></b><br><br> <!-- <a href="#" onClick="window.open('http://www.qtonline.com/chat/','chat','toolbar=no,width=618,height=400,status=yes,scrollbars=yes,resize=no');return false">--> <!--e-trade button--> <!-- /197487 <NOLAYER> <IFRAME SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/cdn.qtonline.com/home;sz=150x75;ord=4391997604454384?" width="150" height="75" frameborder="no" border="0" MARGINWIDTH="0" MARGINHEIGHT="0" SCROLLING="no"> <A HREF="http://ad.doubleclick.net/jump/cdn.qtonline.com/home;abr=!ie;sz=150x75;ord=4391997604454384?"><IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/cdn.qtonline.com/home;abr=!ie;sz=150x75;ord=4391997604454384?" border=0 height="75" width="150"></A> </IFRAME> </NOLAYER> <ILAYER id="layer1" width=150 height=75></ILAYER> --> <!--<img src="/images/chat.gif" width=50 height=16 border=0 alt="chat"> </a> --> &nbsp;</td> <td width=3 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00"> <img src="/images/spacer.gif" width=3 height=1 border=0 alt=""></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=3 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00"> &nbsp;</td> <td width=182 valign=top bgcolor="#FFCC00" align=right> <font face="verdana, arial, helvetica" size=1>- CHUM Television’s bold leadership took on the mantle of probing into the Q world in 1998.
