Over the past 7 months as a Kuro5hin member, I've posted 1 unsuccessful story, 1 successful one, 5 diaries, 154 comments, read every word of nearly every posted article, and read quite a few diaries as well. Without realizing it, I've probably spent an average of 2 hours a day on the site, which comes out to a little over 2 whole weeks of my life.
This morning, it became clear to me that Kuro5hin functions in my life as a church.

The 24 hour edit queue and the spam button (Meta)

We've had a 24 hour edit queue with a spam button for long enough to get a feel for it, perhaps long enough so that new members might not even know that the prior method had a fixed 2 hour time limit, and no spam button.
There has been a smattering of opinion on it scattered among other articles, and I suggest that to help rusty out, it's time to collect some comprehensive feedback on whether we feel that this has improved K5, and whether it could be improved further.

The Blue-Themed Nightmare (Meta)

This is not another political polemic. The way that Kuro5hin, and virtually every other forum in the world, is 'discussing' politics has become more than tiresome. It is damaging, relentless, and all-too-often it is mindless. What follows is a quote from a Henry Miller novel, and some reflection.

Standards Too High? (Meta)

Last night there were almost 10 stories at one stage or another in the queue. Some were interesting to me, some were not. I posted comments to some interesting ones. This morning, it appears that all but one of them have been voted down or otherwise deleted.
The post threshold is 95, and the hide threshold is -20. In a community where users keep the standard so high -- which is a good thing -- the balance seems a little off.

Can K5, as a community, scale?
--
Scalability: An architecture is considered to be scalable if, unchanged, it can handle increasingly complex problems or strain that demand a greater amount of knowledge or resources.
Scoop: Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion, and making sure that the signal remains high.

The edit queue is a Good Thing (TM), but has several flaws.
This article proposes the idea of Works In Progress for subscribers. Subscribers would be able to have a small number of Works in Progress, which could be commented on in the same manner as Edit Feedback operates at present.

The Food icon is not food. (Meta)

The icon for Food topics on k5 does not look like an item of food, nor connotes food in any way. The icon should be changed.
