FLORIDA MARLINS

  'Frustrating,' for openers
Sloppy Marlins can't recover from 8-0 deficit
On their coldest opening day on record, the Marlins were appropriately abominable. Three errors, a wild pitch, a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk to the pitcher -- enough laughably bad baseball to fill an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos -- resulted in an 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

MIAMI HEAT

  BUCKS 91, HEAT 86
Without Caron, Heat fades in fourth quarter
It had all the makings of the Heat's second straight feel-good home victory, this one of the short-handed variety. Monday, the Heat was missing rookie Caron Butler, who sat out with a swollen left knee, which left the burden of carrying the team to anyone willing to take it.

MARCH MANIA

  Road to the Final Four
New Orleans on the horizon
The Texas Longhorns are the last No. 1 seed standing, headed to the Final Four for the first time in 56 years. They will join Syracuse, Marquette and Kansas in New Orleans.

FLORIDA PANTHERS

Weiss becomes aware of weight of offseason
Keenan says Panthers center needs to bulk up
As well-regarded as 19-year-old rookie defenseman Jay Bouwmeester is by Panthers coach Mike Keenan, that's how lightly Keenan regards 19-year-old rookie center Stephen Weiss.

TENNIS

  NASDAQ-100 termed a success
The NASDAQ-100 Open drew 251,946 fans over 12 days, a drop of 13,461 from last year; but tournament chairman Butch Buchholz said the 6 percent drop, and food and retail drops of about 8 to 10 percent, were to be expected.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

  DOLPHINS NOTEBOOK
DT Zgonina signs after 'whirlwind' weekend
Defensive tackle Jeff Zgonina capped a busy four-day weekend Monday by signing a four-year contract with the Dolphins. The signing comes just three days after Zgonina's wife, Cami, gave birth to a girl, Bailey Olivia. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but Zgonina will have a base salary of $655,000 this season, with a cap figure of approximately $770,000.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

  Canes shuffle offensive line
Five players shift positions
Concerns about the lack of quarterback protection during the University of Miami's most recent scrimmage prompted a shakeup of the offensive line in Monday's practice at Greentree Field.

COMMENTARY: Dan Le Batard

Free hot dogs the only bright spot
Well, that will bring them flooding back for Marlins baseball. ''I've never seen us play that bad,'' Marlins first baseman Derrek Lee said after his team opened the season by soiling itself. ``And you'll never see us play that bad again.''

FINAL FOUR
New Orleans

  Does Boeheim know best?
Times have changed for Jim Boeheim. He is not only the Syracuse coach, but he is also the father of three young children - 4-year-old Jimmy and 3-year-old twins, Jack and Jamie.
