Introduction

The Sustainable Development Strategy for 2001-2003 reflects INAC's continuing efforts to integrate the principles of sustainable development into departmental decision making and, in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and northeners, to assist communities to build their own capacity to become self-reliant. This is a formidable challenge and one we know may take years to achieve. However, it is a challenge we must meet to foster good governance, accountability, economic certainty and fiscal stability in First Nations, Inuit and northern communities across the country.

Sustainable development cannot be viewed as a disconnected initiative. It must be seen as a collective goal, to be reached through sound planning and implementation of everything we do in the department. Moving toward sustainable development requires us to fully consider the economic, environmental, governance, cultural and social impacts of our decisions on the fabric of Aboriginal and northern communities. Sustainable development is an assessment tool to help us make the right decisions.
