MIAMI DOLPHINS

  Freeman, Greenwood defending positions
Scrutiny follows Dolphins starters
They're stubbornly clinging to their jobs, so far rebuffing the notion they're the weak links in a star-studded defense. But Arturo Freeman and Morlon Greenwood know the storm of change that has already washed away former teammate Derrick Rodgers threatens them as well.

Dolphins receiver Oronde Gadsden said Thursday he won't know how severe his ankle injury is until Sunday afternoon when a new battery of tests are conducted.

Gadsden has ankle-deep troubles after latest injury
Hurt ligament could put receiver out weeks
Receiver Oronde Gadsden suffered ligament damage to his left ankle during practice Wednesday, leaving his future with the Dolphins in question.

DOLPHINS NOTEBOOK
Gadsden out, upstarts step in
The uncertain status of receiver Oronde Gadsden, who suffered a ligament injury to his left ankle Wednesday morning, has given the Dolphins' younger receivers a chance to impress.

Camp notebook
The Dolphins drafted center Seth McKinney and guard Taylor Whitley in the third round of the past two drafts, but it was an unheralded former Texas A&M; lineman who was practicing with the starters Wednesday. Billy Yates, who signed as an undrafted free agent after turning down Tampa Bay, Chicago and Atlanta, replaced Jamie Nails at left guard. Nails has missed practice over the past few days with a shoulder injury, but he should return soon. ''I just take it as a golden opportunity to go work...

Gadsden out at least a month
Dolphins receiver Oronde Gadsden will likely miss at least four weeks, if not longer, with sprained ligaments in his left ankle. The injury, which occurred during passing drills Wednesday morning, will not require surgery.

Williams has the respect of legend
Jim Brown praises Ricky
As running back mentors go, Ricky Williams couldn't have found anybody better. Likewise, Williams probably couldn't have found anyone better in terms of empathizing with his slightly different approach.

DOLPHINS NOTEBOOK
Seaverns' arrest is investigated
The Dolphins will investigate today the arrest of linebacker Justin Seaverns, who was jailed in Forsyth County (N.C.) two weeks ago after being charged with one count of making harassing phone calls to his former girlfriend.

Camp notebook
WR Derrius Thompson is now officially beyond hot. The kid's smoking, he's scorching, he's . . . choose your adjective that has to do with hot. He caught a pass across the middle in which he stopped in his tracks and seemingly dived backward toward an underthrown pass. He also caught a long pass down the sideline in which he made the grab over his defender, stayed in bounds and served notice he's not just a possession receiver.

Gadsden injured in morning drills
Receiver Oronde Gadsden injured his left ankle early in Wednesday's practice and left the field during the morning session. Gadsden, who re-signed with the team last month, had to be helped from the practice field by a pair of trainers and into a cart. He was driven off the field and hopped on his own power into the facility.

He does a number on skeptics
Thompson is making impact as No. 2 receiver for Dolphins
Derrius Thompson doesn't like to talk about numbers. The news that he's currently the leading candidate for the No. 2 wide receiver job on the Dolphins made him about as excited as a teenager at a bingo parlor.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

  Rhodes to redemption?
He must be crazy. What else could it be? Another morning and Ray Rhodes meets the sun with bloodshot eyes, cap pulled down and already the words are coming in a stream so unwaveringly profane even the players look away in embarrassment.

McNabb has Eagles poised for 'next step'
Donovan McNabb knows how narrow the definition is when he says this season is about the Philadelphia Eagles taking "the next step." When a team has lost consecutive NFC Championship Games, the only steps left are to advance to and win the Super Bowl.
