The Dolphins drafted center Seth McKinney and guard Taylor Whitley in the third round of the past two drafts, but it was an unheralded former Texas A&M; lineman who was practicing with the starters Wednesday. Billy Yates, who signed as an undrafted free agent after turning down Tampa Bay, Chicago and Atlanta, replaced Jamie Nails at left guard. Nails has missed practice over the past few days with a shoulder injury, but he should return soon. ''I just take it as a golden opportunity to go work...

As running back mentors go, Ricky Williams couldn't have found anybody better. Likewise, Williams probably couldn't have found anyone better in terms of empathizing with his slightly different approach.

WR Derrius Thompson is now officially beyond hot. The kid's smoking, he's scorching, he's . . . choose your adjective that has to do with hot. He caught a pass across the middle in which he stopped in his tracks and seemingly dived backward toward an underthrown pass. He also caught a long pass down the sideline in which he made the grab over his defender, stayed in bounds and served notice he's not just a possession receiver.

Gadsden injured in morning drills
Receiver Oronde Gadsden injured his left ankle early in Wednesday's practice and left the field during the morning session. Gadsden, who re-signed with the team last month, had to be helped from the practice field by a pair of trainers and into a cart. He was driven off the field and hopped on his own power into the facility.

He does a number on skeptics
Thompson is making impact as No. 2 receiver for Dolphins
Derrius Thompson doesn't like to talk about numbers. The news that he's currently the leading candidate for the No. 2 wide receiver job on the Dolphins made him about as excited as a teenager at a bingo parlor.
