Cinderella went to the ball in the Freshmen A Division of the Cooper City Optimist in-house basketball playoffs. FSU, the No. 5 seed entering the tournament, used stifling defense and the ball-handling skills of guard Ben Cohen to stun three higher-seeded opponents and win the league championship.

Canes storm Super Series Nationals
11-unders clinch title in Colorado
Broward Canes 11-and-under travel baseball team of Miramar Optimist won the Super Series Nationals in Aurora, Colo. After losing the opener to the (California) Pomona Titans 9-0, the Canes regrouped in the seeding round and defeated the Taxas Longhorns 9-0 and Tulsa 7-0. Seeded third, Broward reached the championship round by beating the Colorado Blaze 10-2, Kansas City Mac-n-Seitz 11-5 and California Arsenal 6-4 in the playoffs.

Blackman leads Cougars over Wildcats in 'Y' hoops
Brittany Blackman scored eight points as the Cougars edged the Wildcats 12-10 in Division 2 Girls of West Broward YMCA basketball. Daniela Escontrela had four points for the Wildcats.

The Herald and the Florida Marlins are co-sponsoring the Team Player spotlight on Sunday's Youth Sports pages in Hometown Herald.
