Hollywood stars once contributed to the mix
Salad has had its fashions. At the turn of the 20th century, mayonnaise was more popular than oil and vinegar dressing, and dairy-based boiled dressings out-polled both.

ICE CREAM TRIVIA
In 1984, President Reagan declared July as ice cream month. Ice cream is believed to have evolved from Roman Emperor Nero's request in 62 A.D. for ice and snow in the Apennine mountains. He would flavor it with fruit juices and honey.

Pan-Asian destination: You'll find it all at Tim's Oriental Grocery
A glance at the shelves of most Asian food markets will tell you the owner's country of origin. At Tim's Oriental Grocery in Homestead, however, the selection is remarkably ecumenical. Well-stocked, well-organized aisles hold the makings for Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Indonesian, Thai, and Filipino dishes plus all kinds of snacks and locally grown Asian produce.

The Food Network spotlights South Florida's night kitchens
The clock strikes midnight. Another grill is switched on; the temperature rises. Prep cooks hastily chop celery, onion and garlic while a line cook stirs the beurre blanc. Above the din of pots clashing and oil sizzling, the sous chef shouts out his orders.

Wine
No need to blush when you drink pink; rosés can be lovely
Pink wine. Rosé. White zinfandel. White merlot. Blush wine. Whatever you call it, it's a dangerous topic for a wine writer. If you're for it, you're a rube. If you're against it, you're a snob -- one of those pusillanimous pussyfooters of puerile prose that Spiro Agnew liked to rail against.

Cake bakes into lemony custard layer
Q. As a newlywed, I redeemed the S&H; green stamps my mother and I had been saving since I was 10 years old for a Sunbeam mixer. The first recipe I tried was in the instruction booklet for the mixer, a dessert that baked into layers of lemon pudding and cake. I still have that mixer, believe it or not, 45 years old and still working well. I no longer have the booklet but would love to make that lemon dessert again. Is there a chance one of your readers can help?

Assertive arugula stands up to the rich and the bland
To say arugula has a bite is putting it mildly. As the fast-growing green matures, the pleasantly peppery flavor unfurls just as certainly as its leaves, and the pungency increases dramatically as the leaves age.
