Gwen Wurm M.D., MPH writes a frequent column on children, health and family issues for the Herald. Gwen is Director of Community Pediatrics at the University of Miami School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and her pediatric training at Albert Einstein/ Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. During Hurricane Andrew, Dr. Wurm was the local health department leader in charge of disaster services. After that experience she returned to Boston to attend the Harvard School of Public Health.

A baby starved to death
Five-month old Woyah Anderssohn is dead. Her last days of life must have been painful; she weighed only seven pounds. She would have been breathing quickly and grunting to rid her body of acid -- until she no longer had the energy to fill her lungs with air. That is what happens when a body eats itself.

Racing film had benefits and costs
Sitting in 2 ½ hours of traffic on the Rickenbacker Causeway, missing Neil Young in concert, I thought of the people in the auto accident up ahead. The cause was drag racing. But it wasn't racers that were hurt. Rather it was two families, including toddlers who were sent to the hospital. A few days later a 17-year-old, driving his father's Corvette, fatally crashed into a pole. He had just finished viewing the street-racing movie, 2 Fast 2 Furious.
